"Russia has generally been neglected in the academic and policy discourse on regional integration in East Asia. This book fills this gap, with particular attention to the role of Pacific Russia in the deepening regional integration in East Asia. It examines the increasingly diverse foreign policy interests of Russia related to emerging economic and political realities of the world, and Russia's potential role in the regional integration in East Asia. Topics discussed include Russian strategic interests and security policy in East Asia generally, Russia's bilateral relations with China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula, opportunities and challenges energy and immigration presents for Russia and its engagement with East Asia, and Russia's present and future roles in regional integration in East Asia"--

Since the Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998, there has been a deep and abiding desire on the part of Asian policy makers and opinion makers to enhance the region's economic, monetary and financial self-sufficiency - or at least to ring-fence the region against financial instability and give it a louder voice in global financial affairs. There has been progress in these directions, notably in the form of the Chiang Mai Initiative of financial supports and the Asian Bond Market Initiative to build a single Asian financial market. The world economy continues to be dominated by the Triad regions: Europe, North America and East Asia. This text analyses the economic relationship that has evolved between two Triadic powers: The EU and East Asia, and its future prospects, especially in the wake of the recent financial crises that have shaken the East Asian region. This text argues that the EU must afford greater priority by promoting its economic relations with East Asia. By this remaining the weakest Triadic link, the EU risks future geopolitical marginalization as the transpacific axis strengthens into the 21st century.
