Abstract

The consequences of a large dam failing can be disastrous. However, predicting the performance of concrete dams during earthquakes is one of the most complex and challenging problems in structural dynamics. Based on a nonlinear approach, Seismic Safety Evaluation of Concrete Dams allows engineers to build models that account for nonlinear phenomena such as vertical joint slippage, cracks, and cavitation. This yields more accurate estimates. Advanced but readable, this book is the culmination of the work carried out by Tsinghua University Research Group on Earthquake Resistance on Dams over th

Abstract

"Written for civil, structural and geotechnical engineers, this book presents the latest research and practical experience in the design of high-arch dams in seismically active regions, from an author team that is highly active and experienced in the design, development and construction of 300-m high arch dams. The book covers the entire subject of dam design for seismic regions, including seismic input mechanisms and modeling, non-linear analysis techniques for dam structure and foundations, concrete material properties, and simulation techniques for dam design. Of particular value are the real-world experimental data and design case studies that enhance the book and ensure that readers can apply the theoretical content to their own projects. Breaks through the conventional concepts in civil engineering discipline and focus on applying new techniques from other subject fields to seismic safety on high-arch dam design in an innovative way -- Shows how to model and evaluate seismic safety of dams using seismic input, dam response and dynamic resistance -- Summarizes the methodology and approaches applied to high-arch dam design and construction in China, demonstrates the selection of site-specific seismic input parameters, and enables the reader to apply this to their own specific design challenge."--Publisher's website.

Abstract

This book presents a comprehensive treatment of earthquake hazards in Lebanon and its vicinity. A thorough review of the tectonics of the region is given alongside a re-assessment of the historical and instrumental earthquake records. Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is undertaken and hazard maps are presented in terms of peak ground parameters as well as spectral ordinates (acceleration and displacement). Owing to their significance to the economy of Lebanon, the three cities of Beirut, Sidon and Tripoli are subjected to site-specific earthquake hazard assessment. The maps provided are

Abstract

Earthquake Hazard, Risk and Disasters presents the latest scientific developments and reviews of research addressing seismic hazard and seismic risk, including causality rates, impacts on society, preparedness, insurance and mitigation. The current controversies in seismic hazard assessment and earthquake prediction are addressed from different points of view. Basic tools for understanding the seismic risk and to reduce it, like paleoseismology, remote sensing, and engineering are discussed. Contains contributions from expert seismologists, geologists, engineers a

Abstract

Earthquakes represent a major risk to buildings, bridges and other civil infrastructure systems, causing catastrophic loss to modern society. Handbook of seismic risk analysis and management of civil infrastructure systems reviews the state of the art in the seismic risk analysis and management of civil infrastructure systems.Part one reviews research in the quantification of uncertainties in ground motion and seismic hazard assessment. Part two discusses methodologies in seismic risk analysis and management, whilst parts three and four cover the application of seismic risk assessment

Abstract

This book provides a timely review and summary of the recent advances in state-of-the-art earthquake geotechnics. The earthquake disasters in Japan and New Zealand in 2011 prompted the urgent need for the state-of-the-art earthquake geotechnics to be put into practice for disaster mitigation. By reviewing the developments in earthquake geotechnics over more than half a century, this unique book enables readers to obtain solid grasp of this discipline. It is based on contributions from 18 leading international experts, who met in Kyoto in June 2016 to discuss a range of issues related to the developments of earthquake geotechnics. It comprehensively discusses various areas of earthquake geotechnics, including performance-based seismic design; the evolution of geotechnical seismic response analysis from 1964-2015; countermeasures against liquefaction; solutions for nuclear power plant disasters; the tsunami-caused inundation of the Tokyo metropolitan area; and a series of state-of-the-art effective stress analyses of case histories from the 2011 East Japan Earthquake. The book is of interest to advanced level researchers and practicing engineers in the field of earthquake geotechnics.
