Abstract

The contributions in this volume shed light on the concepts of "Nature" and "Normativity" from diverse perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches. In an interdisciplinary tandem symposium with invited guests, we successfully brought together vastly different fields, sparking inspiring discussions. Furthermore, the Johanna Quandt Young Academy Fellows engaged with the concepts of "Tenets", "Variations", and "Transformations." In doing so, their thoughts flowed into the depths of their individual research fields as well as the currents of ongoing societal debates - whether related to the inexorable digitization, the intricate dynamics of gender and political power, or the pressing questions of global health and climate change. At the culmination of this intellectual journey, fueled by curiosity and eagerness for knowledge, lies a profound reflection on the significance and impact of their own research approaches. This work also presents a comprehensive explanation of the robust concept and structural cornerstones of Johanna Quandt Young Academy, alongside the fundamental guiding principle that forms the basis of our academic endeavor.

Abstract

When Sir Reginald Goodall died in 1990, at the age of 88, he had already acquired cult status and was considered one of the greatest Wagner conductors of our times. Although he had conducted the première of Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes in 1945 and was admired by Erich Kleiber and Otto Klemperer, he suffered years of neglect until his triumphant return to conduct Die Meistersinger at Sadler's Wells in 1968.John Lucas, author of the acclaimed Thomas Beecham: An Obsession with Music, examines the mysteries of Goodall's early career, his Mosleyite sympathies, his remarkable late flowering and the fame of his last 20 years. Drawing upon letters and diaries as well as extensive interviews with friends and colleagues, Lucas pieces together the life of this enigmatic, self-effacing figure - a great Wagner conductor in a tradition stretching back through Knappertsbusch and Karl Muck to Hans Richter. Previously available as Reggie: The Life of Reginald Goodall - now available for the first time in paperback with a new Preface and Introduction.

Abstract

Scholars and practitioners who witness violence and loss in human, animal, and ecological contexts are expected to have no emotional connection to the subjects they study. Yet is this possible? Following feminist traditions, Vulnerable Witness centers the researcher and challenges readers to reflect on how grieving is part of the research process and, by extension, is a political act. Through thirteen reflective essays the book theorizes the role of grief in the doing of research-from methodological choices, fieldwork and analysis, engagement with individuals, and places of study to the manner in which scholars write and talk about their subjects. Combining personal stories from early career scholars, advocates, and senior faculty, the book shares a breadth of emotional engagement at various career stages and explores the transformative possibilities that emerge from being enmeshed with one's own research.

Abstract

Although Rainer Maria Rilke and his work have been much studied and written about over the past century - as befits the perhaps most important German-language poet of modern times - certain aspects of his early life and career have been neglected or are in need of a fresh look. Accordingly, this book investigates Rilke's life and career from adolescence until the verge of thirty. Here the reader finds the hysterical, harried tutee clinging to Valerie von Rhonfeld; the clever, supercilious, and anxious stroller through Prague of 'Larenopfer;' the narcissistic diarist preening for Lou Andreas-Salomé in Italy and elsewhere; the priggishly high-minded but lethal reviewer of German-language literature; the devoted but delusional presenter of Nordic letters. A final section focuses on thirteen poems or poem clusters composed between 1892 and 1900 and mostly left untouched by Rilke scholarship. While depending heavily on the evidence of the texts themselves, the present author allows himself to conjecture about, for instance, the traces left by the boy's hasty training in Latin; his knowledge - or ignorance - of Czech national opera and popular literature; the genesis of some willfully 'decadent' poems; his odd literary likes and dislikes; and so on. From this 'Wirrnis' (confusion, muddle; one of his favorite words), the young Rilke emerges as a dogged self-educator, and, for all his laments and insecurities and languorous poses, a figure of distinction, gifted with an almost preternatural verbal inventiveness and recondite energy. George C. Schoolfield is emeritus professor of German and Scandinavian Literature at Yale.
