Aleppo and its Hinterland in the Ottoman Period comprises eleven essays in English and French by leading scholars of Ottoman Syria which draw on new research in Turkish, Levantine and other archival sources. Focusing on both the city and its place in the wider region, the collection examines trade guilds and Christian settlement in Aleppo, Turkmen and Bedouin tribes in Aleppo’s interior, international trade and the establishment of an Ottoman commercial tribunal in the Tanzimat period, Aleppo and the rise of the millet system, the Belgian consular presence, Sufi networks in the province of Aleppo, the countryside of Antioch under the Egyptian occupation, and the urban revolt of 1850.

Le long XIXe siècle ottoman fut sans doute le siècle le plus long et le plus tumultueux de cet Empire. Débutant en 1774 avec l’ouverture de la question d’Orient, il se termina en 1923, lors de la proclamation de la république de Turquie.Le xixe siècle ottoman fut aussi un siècle neuf, porteur de la problématique inédite des réformes, marquant le passage d’un ordre ancien à un ordre nouveau, par strates successives, et il bouleversa toutes les institutions, changeant durablement les relations entre État et société. De plus, les réformes se déclinèrent selon des temporalités et des modalités différenciées au centre de l’Empire ottoman, à Istanbul, et dans les provinces de son immense territoire, comme au Caire et à Tunis.L’évolution de l’Empire ottoman est envisagée dans sa confrontation aux nationalismes, aux tensions ethniques ou communautaires ainsi qu’au sein des relations internationales, entrant en résonance avec les enjeux contemporains.
