How do our cities evolve, what forces drive their evolution, and how exactly do they change as a result? Zurich-based architecture firm EM2N has been working on urban transformation processes ever since its establishment in 1997. Initially, the firm’s main focus was on the greater Zurich area, yet in recent years they have also developed and realized projects in Berlin, Brussels, and Hamburg. Over time, a diverse body of work has grown, more than half of which consists of conversions of existing buildings, resulting in numerous successes and a few failures, small structures and large-scale complexes, quick decisions and slow processes. What unites the designs, projects, and texts featured in this first monograph on EM2N is a profound interest in the concept of the city as an exciting, contradictory, and above all productive space of human life that the founding partners Mathias Müller and Daniel Niggli have maintained throughout their twenty-five years of collaboration. In EM2N—City Factory they offer a self-critical review of their achievements and also speak about learning processes, personal interests, and conceptual approaches to future tasks in ever-changing cities. This is supplemented with contributions from fellow architects and friends as well as with a wealth of photographs, plans, drawings, and other illustrations.

BOOK #1 outlines our reactions to the building itself and to the way we chose to work in a collaborative way. The underlying objective is to describe our adopted process of designing – questioning the meaning of an art institution and questioning the usual conventions of architectural practice. The process of showing art in a public space – allowing the existing building to become a key protagonist. The process of connecting to community – encouraging the breaking down of physical, social and mental barriers. The process of production and education – making them both spontaneous and visible actions within the everyday life of KANAL.

Until the year 2000, Toni was a dairy factory, and its signature yoghurt packed in small brown glass jars, was one of Switzerland's best-known food staples. After production had been relocated to another part of Switzerland the vast plant, situated in Zurich's up-and-coming former industrial neighbourhood, was soon occupied by clubs and trendy restaurants as well as by many artists setting-up their studios here. Between 2011 and 2014 it was converted into the new home of Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK. The design by Swiss architects EM2N kept the building's basic structure and offers up-to-date educational facilities. The entire complex, comprising also a museum, restaurants, a music club as well as 100 apartments, is open to the urban environment. This new book documents the history and metamorphosis of the Toni plant. Richly illustrated with photographs, plans, and graphic art, it shows the premises industrial past, the complex reconstruction process, and its new function as a place where all the different mentalities and ways to study, to teach, and to work in the field of art coexist.
