Abstract

This is the second edition of Virgil's works by the German classical philologist Otto Ribbeck, published in Leipzig in 1894-1895. It is solely a work of textual criticism, in which Ribbeck assembled what he believed to be the most reliable edition from different authorities. While it includes no commentary on the text by the editor, it is considered a work of great erudition, demonstrating immense scholarly knowledge of Virgil's work. It consists of four parts published in two volumes. Volume 2 contains the second half of the Aeneid (Books 7-12), describing the Trojans' arrival in Italy and the ensuing wars; and the Appendix Vergiliana, which gives the texts of other poems which had been assigned to the Virgilian canon.

Abstract

Abstract

A new edition of the Aeneid requires not only a systematic and reliable assessment of the text, but also a satisfactory and, if possible, complete description of the manuscripts' transmission. Here, not only were the seven Late Antique codices studied anew, but the recensio was also extended by drawing on sources from the Carolingian Age only some of which were incorporated by earlier editors. To this end eight tesimonies which had never been studied previously were collated. As a result the reader has access to an apparatus criticus which is mainly dedicated to textual matters.

Abstract

Book VIII is one of the most attractive and important books of Virgil's Aeneid. It includes the visit of Aaneas to the site of the future Rome, the story of Hercules and Cacus, the episode between Venus and Vulcan and the description of the great symbolic shield of Aeneas. Mr Gransden's introduction relates this book to the Aeneid as a whole considers the text in various aspects: the topography, Virgil's sense of history, his typology and symbolism, his literary style and his influence on subsequent vernacular poetry. The commentary discusses points of special interest and difficulty in interpretation, style and prosody and gives detailed explanation of the many allusions in Book VIII to customs, legends, traditions and historical events. This is primarily a textbook for university students and sixth-formers, but it also contains material which may be of interest to students of English and comparative literature.

Abstract

This volume provides the first full-scale commentary on the eighth book of Virgil's 'Aeneid', the book in which the poet presents the unforgettable tour of the site of the future Rome that the Arcadian Evander provides for his Trojan guest Aeneas, as well as the glorious apparition and bestowal of the mystical, magical shield of Vulcan on which the great events of the future Roman history are presented - culminating in the Battle of Actium and the victory of Octavian over the forces of Antony and Cleopatra. A critical text based on a fresh examination of the manuscript tradition is accompanied by a prose translation.

Abstract

A new edition of the Aeneid requires not only a systematic and reliable assessment of the text, but also a satisfactory and complete description of the manuscripts' transmission. Here, the seven Late Antique codices were studied anew. The recensio also draws on sources from the Carolingian Age. To this end eight Carolingian testimonies never studied before were collated. The editio altera contains several corrections and additional conjectures.
