This book examines a wide swath of political discourse-some old and some contemporary-looking for what makes political speech persuasive, eloquent, and concise. Focusing mainly on twentieth century oratory and using computer-based methods of analysis, the political scientist Roderick P. Hart argues that eloquence is the byproduct of cultural resonance, personal investment, and poetic imagination. As Catherine Nicholson has said, "to speak English eloquently is to speak it strangely." Taking this literally, to say that something is "strange" is to say that it is statistically anomalous, deviating in important ways from a cache of other texts. Therefore persuasive political speech stands apart from mundane conversation, stirring emotions and spurring action. This work in the digital humanities considers some 60,000 textual documents to which were applied a computer program called DICTION, a utility that has been used in over 700 published studies throughout the humanities and social sciences during the last forty years. Although based on objective data, 80 percent of the manuscript features the author's critical analysis of the most important speeches of the twentieth century. Each chapter features texts that fundamentally changed life in the United States, texts authored by speakers ranging from Martin Luther King, Jr. to Lou Gehrig, from Woodrow Wilson to Hillary Clinton, from Mario Savio to Mario Cuomo.

Politicians employ a wide range of strategies to achieve their goals - and language is one of them. What impact does their language have on us, on their opponents, on the public opinion? If language matters, then the interesting question naturally arises how politicians use language to their advantage? How do they use it to convince us of the truth of their views? These questions take us into the world of political framing, which has attracted a lot of attention in recent times and forms the subject of this book. Framing is obviously not a new phenomenon, nor is it the preserve of right-wing politicians, as is sometimes suggested. The author discusses both old and new examples of framing, as well as various left and right-wing frames. The examples presented in this book have been carefully selected, in the hope that they will not only help you understand the game of framing and reframing but also show you how much impact you can have by using the right words.

The Monstrous Discourse in the Donald Trump Campaign: Implications for National Discourse provides a lens through which to explore the implications of the monster metaphor, as applied to Trump during the 2016 presidential election. Analyzing the overt and buried usages of the monster metaphor in the media's and Trump's discourse, as well as the structure of the monster narrative generally, offers connections between the metaphor and the actions incited by its narrative. This book explores the ways in which this language also serves as a metaphor to understand the ecology of Trump's candidacy and the polarized responses drawn by his campaign and considers its troubling implications for the future direction of national discourse. By looking at rhetoric and politics, this book offers a novel account of Juan Luis Vives' intellectual oeuvre. It argues that Vives adjusted rhetorical theory to a monarchical context in which direct speech was not a possibility, demonstrated how Erasmian languages of ethical self-government and political peace were actualized rhetorically and critically in a princely environment and, finally, rethought the cognitive and emotional foundations of humanist rhetoric in his late and famous De anima et vita (1538). Ultimately, towards the end of his life, Vives epitomized a distinctively cognitive view of politics; he maintained that political concord was not a direct outcome of institutional or legal reform or of the spiritual transformation of the Christian world (an optimistic Erasmian interpretation), but that concord could only be upheld once the dynamics of emotions that motivated political action were understood and controlled through responsible rhetoric that respected decorum and civility. --
