Selon la tradition dzogchen tibétaine – enseignement spirituel qui transcende toute forme religieuse particulière et vise à transmettre une connaissance complète des conditions de l’être humain – il arrive qu’à la mort d’un maître particulièrement accompli, son corps rétrécisse puis disparaisse, le souvent au bout de quelques jours, pour se fondre en lumière. Ce phénomène est l’un des plus fascinants qui soient et sa réalité peut à bon droit susciter l’incrédulité. Pour en avoir le cœur net, Francis Tiso s’est rendu au Tibet pour mener une enquête à propos d’un cas récent, celui du yogi khenpo A Chö, décédé en 1998, en interrogeant les témoins de sa disparition et en rencontrant les maîtres qui l’avaient connu.D’autre part, il s’est également intéressé à l’histoire de cette doctrine depuis les origines de la tradition dzogchen et aux résonances que ce phénomène peut entretenir avec la disparition du corps de Jésus-Christ et la promesse faite aux chrétiens de ressusciter en un corps de lumière. Évagre le Pontique, actif à la fin du IVe siècle, est l’auteur de textes majeurs à ce sujet. Or il se trouve que le christianisme syriaque a accordé une grande importance à ses enseignements contemplatifs, transmis le long de la Route de la soie jusqu'en Chine, où on le connaissait pour cette raison sous le nom de « religion de la lumière ».L’ouvrage explore ainsi l’hypothèse vertigineuse de rencontres et d’échanges autour de pratiques visionnaires, entre chrétiens et bouddhistes, manichéens, musulmans et hindous, au VIIIe siècle, dans des oasis d’Asie centrale, aux confins des mondes perse, indien, tibétain et chinois. La tradition dzogchen serait née de ces rencontres, proposant à ses adeptes comme réalisation ultime cette extraordinaire manière de mourir.
