Lepers, slaves, and the indigenous-these were the people who L loved Blessed Peter Donders, who chose to live among them to bring them spiritual and physical comfort. Father Pete, a native of Holland declared "Blessed" by Pope John Paul II, spent forty-five years until his death providing care for his neighbors in the small nation of Surinam on the north coast of South America. His complete letters, set in the context of a description of his life, tell the story of one man's heroic love as a follower of Christ. Moved by his loving trust in the "Good God," he was called to bring Christ to people neglected and segregated from the well-to-do and important. His constant message reminded all that Jesus shed his blood for them just as he did for us."
