En busca del "Quijote" desde otra orilla parte de la estimación de que no existen separaciones entre los diversos campos del saber y de que las producciones literarias son manifestaciones específicas de un sistema de representación global históricamente determinado. Así, ha parecido necesario situar el Quijote en sus diversas circunstancias, vinculándolo a los contextos con arreglo a los cuales se ha fraguado, especialmente con respecto a las mentalidades y a los referentes implicados, sin olvidar las particularidades culturales que afloran en él, tanto eruditas como populares. De ahí, los acercamientos utilizados, de tipo histórico, antropológico y literario, para ir en busca de la creación cervantina, utilizando pues una orientación científica diferente de la que suele adoptar la crítica al uso, lo que justifica el título. Asimismo, se han seguido tres caminos convergentes: la emergencia de una nueva poética, la inversión de los códigos y la compleja unión de paradoja, parodia e invención, alcanzada gracias al análisis de algunos episodios.

Wie stehen der Wunsch nach Abenteuern und die Lust des Lesens in Beziehung? Wer aufbricht, um Abenteuer zu suchen, wird von - teils unbewussten - Wunschenergien geleitet. In ähnlicher Weise folgen Leser*innen den arrangierten Wechselfällen des Zufalls gespannt, selbst dann wenn ein gutes Ende bereits absehbar ist. Werden Abenteuerheld*innen auf die Probe gestellt und von ihnen ersehnte Erfahrungen aufgeschoben, erweisen sich psychologische Konzepte wie Angstlust und Vorlust als aufschlussreich. Antriebsmomente der Erzählung und begehrliche Lektüre sind dabei eng verknüpft. And second, what is the relationship between this genre and understandings of modernity? In Forms of Modernity, Rachel Schmidt examines how seminal theorists and philosophers have wrestled with the status of Cervantes' masterpiece as an 'exemplary novel', in turn contributing to the emergence of key concepts within genre theory. Roman noir, parabole de la capitulation des intellectuels face à la montée du nazisme, Auto-da-fé de Canetti (dont le titre allemand Die Biendung signifie « L’Aveuglement ») est aussi une transposition magistrale de Don Quichotte. L’analogie entre les deux romans est si patente qu’elle n’a pas manqué d’être relevée par la critique, mais elle n’avait pas encore, à ce jour, fait l’objet d’une étude approfondie. Pire, elle n’a trop souvent servi qu’à alimenter l’idée reçue selon laquelle Elias Canetti serait un écrivain conventionnel, pour ne pas dire réactionnaire. Au moyen d’une analyse comparative précise, Christine Meyer met à jour le réseau de correspondances qui relient Auto-da-fé au chef-d’œuvre de Cervantès. Elle parvient ainsi à éclairer les enjeux multiples, à la fois esthétiques et philosophiques, de la transformation intertextuelle chez Canetti.
