"Dogmatism is generally regarded as a bad thing. For scientists in particular, there are few more disconcerting vices than dogmatism. But what exactly does this term mean? Where does it come from and how does its centuries-long history resonate in current debates? This open-access book, co-authored by Herman Paul and Alexander Stoeger, traces the history of dogmatism as a scholarly vice term. Starting in ancient Greece, but with an emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it follows the term across periods, countries, and disciplines. It shows how new layers of meaning emerged over time, while older ones sometimes remained surprisingly persistent.According to Paul and Stoeger, this combination of semantic flexibility and historical connotations helps explain why dogmatism, unlike other ancient vice terms, is still with us as a chameleonic concept that can be pitted against open-mindedness, critical thinking, progress, and innovation. The book makes an original contribution to the history of scholarly virtues and vices and, more broadly, to a transdisciplinary history of the sciences, social sciences, and humanities."

"The Magic Cloak is an outgrowth of a paper written in 1940 entitled "The Unconscious Influences in the Choice of an Occupation." This paper was read before the Central Neuropsychiatric Society meeting in Detroit in the early 1940s. It was reread later before the Illinois Psychiatric Society, at which time it was discussed by Dr. Leon J. Saul. In his discussion, Dr. Saul brought out the fact that he had reviewed the occupational selection of the patients that he was treating by psychoanalysis. He noted that there were unconscious influences responsible for the choice of occupation made by most of his patients. This book explores the unconscious influences in one's choice of occupation. The chapters explore different contexts and disorders, and brings theories of unconscious influence to bear in this exploration."

Why does the history of dogmatism deserve our attention? This open access book analyses uses of the term, following dogmatism from Victorian Britain to Cold War America, examining why it came to be regarded as a vice, and how understandings of its meaning have evolved. Whilst the field of scientific thought is committed to continuous innovation, ideas about dogmatism - with their roots in ancient philosophy - are pervasive in scientific thought today. Carrying connotations of both vice and ecclesiastical authority, the term's prevalence during the 'age of science', and the rise of new thought categories such as totalitarianism and creationism, prompted scholars to repeat the old wisdom that science is incompatible with dogmatism. Tracing the concept across decades and different disciplines, Paul and Stoeger demonstrate how it has survived not only the passage of time, but changes in language and scientific methodologies. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Dutch Research Council (NWO).
