Les chercheurs Gauthier et Bissonnette présentent les stratégies pédagogiques les plus efficaces qui sont au cœur du travail du personnel enseignant. Leur ouvrage constitue une synthèse des recherches sur l’efficacité de l’enseignement et des écoles qu’ils ont menées depuis plus de 30 ans, ainsi que des nombreuses publications qui y sont associées. Les auteurs expliquent d’abord leur modèle conceptuel de l’enseignement efficace, puis cernent au chapitre 1 ce qu’ils appellent l’« esprit » de l’enseignement explicite. Les trois chapitres suivants proposent 40 stratégies pédagogiques efficaces à utiliser tant au niveau de la classe que de l’école. Ces stratégies sont regroupées en fonction des trois dimensions indispensables liées à l’enseignement efficace : le curriculum, l’enseignement des contenus proprement dit et, enfin, la gestion des comportements. Chaque stratégie est décrite à partir des mêmes rubriques : Définition, Justification et illustration en classe, Données probantes, Références, Pour en savoir davantage. Le chapitre 5 présente sous forme de tableaux une synthèse des stratégies à privilégier et des erreurs à éviter lorsque l’enseignante ou l’enseignant donne une leçon. Finalement, le chapitre 6 s’intéresse à l’école et à la gestion des services offerts aux élèves.
