Abstract

This publication was the result of the communications and debates at the First Luso-Brazilian Seminar: Pedagogy, Online Learning and Digital Technologies in Higher Education, carried out by the Group of educational policies and educational dynamics (GRUPOEDE) of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the 20th Century (CEIS20). by the Mobile Research Unit in Local Studies (ELO) of the Open University and by the Porto Delegation of the same University, which was held in Coimbra in May 2017. This meeting was a space for the exchange of experiences and reflection around the emerging learning environments, based on digital technologies in the context of higher education. Starting from distance or face-to-face teaching, the various chapters discuss the impact of digital learning on the construction of teaching processes, the construction of a differentiated didactics, the emergence of new educational paradigms, but above all, they seek to map ways of innovation that are being built and consolidated in Portugal and Brazil.

Abstract

In recent years, the relationship with knowledge has undergone profound changes due to the expansion of digital technologies and interactive communication networks. Most people have experienced intense use of these technologies, which has directly affected their mental and social structures. The cognitive abilities of the subjects, in these digital grafocentric societies, require new and differentiated teaching-learning processes. Such clarity then requires different perspectives in analyzing the educational world, which is quite different - in the face of new audiences, new needs and new possibilities. Being and emerging and embryonic theme, there are still many gaps in this area's scientific literature, lacking new reflections and studies. Thus, the present work seeks to contribute to discussions of specific and necessary themes for this new vision of education, which aims at developing in its students varied interdisciplinary skills, adequate to the demands of the present millennium. This book aims to meet the interests of those who think or do quality education, exploiting the potential of emerging technologies.

Abstract

This report documents how the ongoing digital transformation is affecting people’s lives across the 11 key dimensions that make up the How’s Life? Well-being Framework (Income and wealth, Jobs and earnings, Housing, Health status, Education and skills, Work-life balance, Civic engagement and governance, Social connections, Environmental quality, Personal security, and Subjective well-being). A summary of existing studies highlights 39 key impacts of the digital transformation on people’s well-being. The review shows that these impacts can be positive as digital technologies expand the boundaries of information availability and enhance human productivity, but can also imply risks for people’s well-being, ranging from cyber-bullying to the emergence of disinformation or cyber-hacking. In sum, making digitalisation work for people’s well-being would require building equal digital opportunities, widespread digital literacy and strong digital security. Continued research and efforts in improving statistical frameworks will be needed to expand our knowledge on the many topics covered in this report.

Abstract

If artificial intelligence (AI) can generate texts, was does that say about what a text is? What are the differences between texts written by humans and those generated by AI? What opportunities, limits, and risks will arise when AI-generated texts are henceforth accepted and recognized in scholarly discourses? This volume sheds light on these challenges from a wide range of disciplines.

Abstract

From the invention of the worldwide web in 1989 to where stand now, digital technologies have profoundly changed the way we work, think, communicate, learn, etc. But most inevitably, it has changed the way we shop. The ever-changing world of retail had to adapt and the fashion sector makes no exception.Nowadays, brands that want to strive have to focus on their customers in a sustainable and scalable way by realising a full integration of digital technologies as part of their digital transformation. More than ever before, the customer experience needs to be immersive, personalised and interactive. But what role do digital technologies actually hold in this landscape and how do they enhance the customer/user experience? This work aims at answering this question, both for in-store and online experience. The first part will start by examining the context with fashion retailers and the fashion retail market in figures. E-commerce drivers and barriers will also be reviewed along with Belgian consumers expenditures in fashion retail. Then, we will review the academic literature dedicated to customer experience, omnichannel retailing and digital technologies. In the second part, the aim is to take a closer look at the situation with the use of case studies. The first chapter of this section will give an overview of the most avant-garde actors in the fashion retail industry all over the world by showcasing one pure player (ASOS) and one omnichannel retailer (H&M) that are currently using state-of-the-art technology. We will also list other actors identified during this research that are using technology to improve the customer experience. As for the remainder of this part, we will consider a promising digital technology: 3D body scanning.

Abstract

South Asia region's economies continue on a recovery path, with production and export having recovered to pre-COVID trend levels. But the recovery has been uneven across countries and sectors, and significant risks exist that could jeopardize short-term recovery and long-term growth. Over the short-term, low vaccination rates in most countries in the region make the population and economies vulnerable to future COVID waves and lockdowns; supply shortages due to global supply bottlenecks continue to put upward pressure on (food) inflation, especially after consumption recovers. Over the long-term, the region faces long-lasting scarring effects from the pandemic. The emergence of a new services economy creates an opportunity for the region to shift gears and to move towards a services-led development model. The importance of services has been increasing over time and got a further boost during the response to the COVID pandemic, when digital technologies became critical. This new services economy comprises not just the ICT sector, but also business and professional services that are increasingly critical inputs into manufacturing and other sectors, and digital platforms that are creating new markets. It can become the driver of development in South Asia because 1) Services are increasingly tradable and also represent a large part of value added incorporated in the exports of goods. 2) Services firms can drive productivity growth because of innovations that make their own products and other industries more efficient 3) The services sector also generates jobs and helps upgrading skills through on-the-job training. To unleash the potential of the new services economy, policy makers should rethink regulations and establish new institutions to enable 1) competition and innovation 2) increased labor mobility and up-skilling, through education and on-the job training; 3) the absorption of new services by firms and households. Governments in South Asia are addressing these new realities, but they face major challenges. With countries worldwide struggling to find an optimal institutional environment for the new services sectors, a good option for South Asia is to experiment with regulatory sandboxes.

Abstract

The digital agriculture revolution holds a promise to build an agriculture and food system that is efficient, environmentally sustainable, and equitable, one that can help deliver the Sustainable Development Goals. Unlike past technological revolutions in agriculture, which began on farms, the current revolution is being sparked at multiple points along the agrifood value chain. The change is driven by the ability to collect, use, and analyze massive amounts of machine-readable data about practically every aspect of the value chain, and by the emergence of digital platforms disrupting existing business models. All this allows for drastically reduced transaction costs and pervasive information asymmetries that plague the agrifood system. The success of the digital transformation, however, is not guaranteed as the risks it brings are numerous, including those related to data governance and inadequate competition within and between digital platforms. What's Cooking: Digital Transformation of the Agrifood System investigates how digital technologies can accelerate the transformation of the agrifood system by increasing efficiency on the farm; improving farmers' access to output, input, and financial markets; strengthening quality control and traceability; and improving the design and delivery of agriculture policies. It also identifies a key role for the public sector in maximizing the benefits of this process while minimizing its risks, through enabling an innovation ecosystem featuring open datasets, digital platforms, digital entrepreneurship, digital payment systems, and digital skills and encouraging equitable technology adoption.
