Modern medical technologies, especially the pre-implantation and prenatal diagnosis, have given the possibility of preventive dealing with the risks of physical or mental disabilities. On the other side there is the call for support and 'inclusion? of people with disabilities. These opposing trends are critically analyzed and discussed in depth from a legally, genetic, as well as from a medical, social and ethical point of view, Menschen mit genetischen Behinderungen körperlicher oder seelischer Art gibt es seit Anbeginn der Menschheit. Moderne medizinische Technologien, namentlich die der Präimplantations- und Pränataldiagnostik, eröffnen nicht nur der Medizin, sondern auch der Gesamtgesellschaft die Möglichkeit des präventiven Umgangs mit genetisch bedingten Erkrankungsrisiken. Auf der anderen Seite besteht der gesellschaftliche Anspruch nach einer Förderung und 'Inklusion? von Menschen mit Behinderung. Diese gegenläufigen Entwicklungen bedürfen der näheren Analyse und kritischen Diskussion. Der vorliegende Band ist aus Vorträgen und Diskussionen eines Expertenworkshops, ausgerichtet vom Institut für Humangenetik am Universitätsklinikum Göttingen in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Göttinger Zentrum für Medizinrecht, hervorgegangen. Ziel dieses Bandes ist es, diese grundlegende Problematik insbesondere aus juristischer wie humangenetischer, aber ebenso aus medizin- wie sozialethischer Sicht vertiefend zu reflektieren.

No Hamlets' is the first critical account of the role of Shakespeare in the intellectual tradition of the political right in Germany from the founding of the Empire in 1871 to the 'Bonn Republic' of the Cold War era. In this sustained study, Andreas Höfele begins with Friedrich Nietzsche and follows the rightist engagement with Shakespeare to the poet Stefan George and his circle, including Ernst Kantorowicz, and the literary efforts of the young Joseph Goebbels during the Weimar Republic, continuing with the Shakespeare debate in the Third Reich and its aftermath in the controversy over 'inner emigration' and concluding with Carl Schmitt's Shakespeare writings of the 1950s. Central to this enquiry is the identification of Germany and, more specifically, German intellectuals with Hamlet. The special relationship of Germany with Shakespeare found highly personal and at the same time highly political expression in this recurring identification, and in its denial. But Hamlet is not the only Shakespearean character with strong appeal: Carl Schmitt's largely still unpublished diaries of the 1920s reveal an obsessive engagement with Othello which has never before been examined. Interest in German philosophy and political thought has increased in recent Shakespeare studies. 'No Hamlets' brings historical depth to this international discussion. Illuminating the constellations that shaped and were shaped by specific appropriations of Shakespeare, Höfele shows how individual engagements with Shakespeare and a whole strand of Shakespeare reception were embedded in German history from the 1870s to the 1950s and eventually 1989, the year of German reunification.

One of the biggest political stories of the past few decades in the United Kingdom and elsewhere has been the growing divide between the working class and the mainstream liberal left, which historically has spoken for them. This book offers a close analysis of that phenomenon by showing how the political scene looks to underemployed white men who have seen their standards of living fall in recent years even as their communities have fractured around them. Rather than cast aspersions or mount arguments about the larger success of society as a whole, 'The Rise of the Right' takes these men and their concerns seriously, showing where their opinions are factually wrong but arguing powerfully that liberal politics must find a way of acknowledging and addressing their legitimate fears and frustrations.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is acknowledged as a landmark in the development of children's rights. Article 3 makes the child's best interests a primary consideration in all actions concerning children and requires States Parties to ensure their care and protection. This volume, written by experts in children's rights from a range of jurisdictions, explores the implementation of Article 3 around the world. It opens with a contextual analysis of Article 3, before offering a critique of its implementation in various settings, including parenting, religion, domestic violence and baby switching.
