This volume provides a detailed overview of compounding in Italian, from the earliest stages until today. Based on an analysis of data from different corpora, it describes the compound words that Italian has created in the course of the centuries, highlighting elements of continuity with Latin as well as innovative aspects.

This study presents a corpus-based semasiologial and onomasiological analysis of the paradigm of adjectives and adverbs of accuracy. Looking specifically at justo / justamente, cabal / cabalmente, preciso / precisamente, and exacto / exactamente, it is above all concerned with the development of three pragmatic-discursive functions: focalization, affirmation, and reformulation.

The single-volume standard work on the history of the German language has now been revised. It provides an overview of the linguistic changes in German from its Indogermanic prehistory to the present. Since linguistic history, social history, and political history are closely connected, this textbook is intended for students studying all forms of language and literature, as well as historians, social scientists, and interested laypersons.

Complementizers may be defined as conjunctions that have the function of identifying clauses as complements. In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that they have additional functions. Some of these functions are semantic in the sense that they represent conventional contributions to the meanings of the complements. The present book puts a focus to these semantic complementizer functions.

Linguistic variation is a topic of ongoing interest to the field. Its description and its explanations continue to intrigue scholars from many different backgrounds. By taking a deliberately broad perspective on the matter, covering not only crosslinguistic and diachronic but also intralinguistic and interspeaker variation and examining phenomena ranging from negation over connectives to definite articles in well- and lesser-known languages, the volume furthers our understanding of variation in general. The papers offer new insights into, among other things, the theoretical notion of comparative concepts, the social or mental nature of language structure, the areal factor in lexical typology and the diachronic implications of semantic maps. The collection will thus be of relevance to typologists and historical linguists, as well as to people studying variation within the areas of cognitive and functional linguistics.

Not a few of the more prominent and persistent controversies among classical scholars about approaches and methods arise from a failure to appreciate the fundamental role of time in structuring the interpretation of Greek culture. Diachrony showcases the corresponding importance of diachronic models for the study of ancient Greek literature and culture. Diachronic models of culture reach beyond mere historical change to the systemically evolving dynamics of cultural institutions, practices, and artifacts. The papers collected here illustrate the construction and proper use of such models. They emphasize the complementarity of synchronic and diachronic perspectives and highlight the need to assess how well diachronic models fit history. The contributors to this volume strive to be methodologically explicit as they tackle a wide range of subjects with a variety of diachronic approaches. Their work shows both the difficulty and the promise of diachronic analysis. Our incomplete knowledge of Greek antiquity throughout time and the Greeks' own preoccupation with the past in the construction of their present make diachronic analysis not just invaluable but indispensable for the study of ancient Greek literature and culture.

Even though a rich written tradition documents the evolution from Latin to French, the crucial transition from Late Latin to Old French in the oral language remains partially obscure. Thanks to a corpus-based approach and the collaboration of Latinists and French historians, this edited volume sheds a new light on this "missing link".
