This dissertation by Nina Lindell explores perinatal risk factors associated with the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children and adolescents. It examines genetic and environmental influences, focusing on factors such as mode of childbirth, maternal BMI, gestational weight gain, and birthweight. The study utilizes data from Swedish medical and pediatric diabetes registries, incorporating case-control and cohort methodologies. Findings indicate that maternal overweight and high birthweight are linked to increased T1D risk, while low birthweight is associated with a decreased risk. The research aims to enhance understanding of T1D etiology and suggests further investigation into modifiable risk factors for prevention.
