Abstract

If, in fact, "Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her [step]mother forty whacks," why (from a representational standpoint) did her stepmother deserve it? If older gay men in Internet chat rooms regularly provide much-needed acceptance and advice to younger gay males during the coming-out process, how is it that they continually reinforce racist ideologies and powerless subjectivities while doing so? What sorts of media images are commonly presented of individuals and groups that are regard...

Abstract

The youth culture is on everyone's lips today, as pressures build to ban controversial song lyrics, reintroduce school prayer, and prohibit teenagers' access to contraceptives. It's not the first time Americans have been outraged over the ""seuction of the innocent."". When James Dean and Marlon Brando donned their motorcycle jackets and adopted alienated poses in Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden, and The Wild One, in the 1950's, so did countless numbers of American teenagers. Or so it seemed to their parents. American teenagers were looking and acting like juvenile delinquents. By mid-deca

Abstract

"This text argues for the usefulness of fictional realities for criminological theorizing and analysis. It illustrates that a creative and critical social scientific practice requires craft norms rather than the commercial norms that threaten to completely colonize higher education. It also illustrates that pedagogical enquiry is relevant and important for criminology. In illustrating the argument, major concepts of prominent and influential theoretical frameworks are highlighted and explicated through their systematic application to the fictional social realities provided by a selection of films. In addition to illustrating theoretical analysis and clarifying concepts, Frauley offers several original interpretations, descriptions, and explanations of cinematic narratives. This provides for the bridging of theory and application and will provide an innovative and interesting context in which to engage readers in the exploration of criminological theory and theorizing"--Provided by publisher.
