The book explores contemporary theories of development and their historical trajectories. It provides an overview of the main development paradigms according to the Neederven Pieterse´s classification: modernization school, dependency school, human development, neoliberalism, alternative development and postdevelopment. All perspectives are narrated from critical post-structuralist perspective exploring the knowledge-power nexus and each paradigm is linked to actors and institutions that apply particular approach. Special attention is paid to the globalisation processes that have dramatically reshaped historical and contemporary patterns of uneven development. The textbook is tailored to introductory courses of human geography, development studies, social and political sciences as well as to answer to the interest of the general public.

The risk, uncertainty and security of the energy system development are the topics which relevance has been determined by the particularly complicated issues of the energy supply and its functioning in contemporary societies under global energy system. The development of the energy sector has always been not only one of the basic conditions for society development, but one of the most serious threats to enormous and multidimensional (economic, health, ecological, social and political) predictable and unpredictable, probable and unexpected multifaceted security issues. The consequences of the positive and negative globalization are particularly evident in the energy sector, both in the provision of cheap and environmentally friendly energy resources, and in the event of harmful and even tragic consequences for the development of the energy system. An important element of energy politics in liberal democratic societies is the public opinion and participation. The perception of energy security in the Lithuanian society is analyzed from rational choice, reflexive modernization, system theory, postmodern perspective, cultural theory, and governance theory points of views. Sociological analysis of energy security is considered to be a relatively separate branch of sociology. It differs from other topics not so much on the particularity of the theoretical approaches, but on the topic itself. It requires specific adaptation of risk theories for the analysis of specific data. The monograph is based on data from two (2013 and 2014) representative Lithuanian society surveys (18 and older). The results reflect the opinion of Lithuanian population distributed by age, sex, place of residence, education, purchasing power and occupation.

This book focuses on the major social and political forces that have shaped the ways in which sport has been understood, organized, and contested in an effort to engender social change. Integrating the history of international development with the history of modern sport, the authors examine the underpinnings of sport-for-development from the mid-19th through the early 21st centuries. Including both archival research and extensive interviews with more than 15 individuals who were central to the institutions and movements that shaped sport as a force for development, this book will be of particular interest to the growing number of scholars, students, practitioners, advocates and activists interested in the possibilities and limitations of sport-for-development.

‘Here is an excellent comparative analysis of development in Asia’s reform-era communist societies. The authors add much to our understanding of the experiences and prospects of China, Vietnam, and Laos. Of equal importance, the comparison of the three helps to differentiate the successes and challenges of their political economic models from the idiosyncrasies of situation and leadership.’ Brantly Womack, C. K. Yen Professor of Foreign Affairs, University of Virginia, USA ‘China, Laos and Vietnam are evidently markedly different but they share a common commitment to socialist market development. This book ambitiously brings their experiences of transformation into conversation, connecting the planning, governance and politics of such development with its outcomes in terms of society and environment. It holds important lessons for theory and practice, and for countries beyond these three socialist states.’ Jonathan Rigg, Professor and Chair in Human Geography, University of Bristol, UK This book is intended for policy-makers, academics and students of development studies, area studies, political economy, geography and political science. Three of the best global performers in terms of economic growth are authoritarian states led by communist parties. The ‘socialist market economy’ model employed in China, Vietnam and Laos performs better than the economic systems in countries at a similar level of income per capita on a wide range of development indicators, yet market reforms and governance failures have led to highly unequal societies and significant environmental problems. This book presents the first comparative study of development in these three countries. Written by country experts and scholars of development studies, it explores the ongoing quest for market versus state within their model, and the coherence of their development. Arve Hansen is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Development and the Environment at the University of Oslo. He has a decade of experience working on development in Vietnam. Jo Inge Bekkevold is a Senior Adviser at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies. He was previously a career diplomat, with postings to China and Vietnam. Kristen Nordhaug is a Professor of Development Studies at Oslo Metropolitan University. His work focuses on political and economic development in East and Southeast Asia.

This open access book provides methodological devices and analytical frameworks for the study of societies in transformation. It explores a central paradox in the study of change: making sense of change requires long-term perspectives on societal transformations and on the different ways people experience social change, whereas the research carried out to study change is necessarily limited to a relatively short space of time. This volume offers a range of methodological responses to this challenge by paying attention to the complex entanglement of qualitative research and the metanarratives generally used to account for change. Each chapter is based on a concrete case study from different parts of the world and tackles a diversity of topics, analytical approaches, and data collection methods. The contributors’ innovative solutions provide valuable tools and techniques for all those interested in the study of change.
