Abstract

Sustainability challenges blur the boundaries between academic disciplines, between research, policy and practice, and between states, markets and society. What do exemplary scientists and organisations do to bridge the gaps between these groups and help their research to make the greatest impact? How do they do it? And how can their best practices be adapted for a diverse range of specific sustainability challenges? Enhancing Science Impact: Bridging Research, Policy and Practice for Sustainability addresses these questions in an accessible and engaging way. It provides principles explaining how research programs can work more effectively across the boundaries between science, society and decision-making by building social and institutional networks. The book suggests useful ways of thinking about a diverse range of problems and then offers five approaches to help embed science in sustainability governance. It will be an indispensable guide for researcher leaders, science program managers and science policy advisers interested in ensuring that applied research can meaningfully contribute to sustainability outcomes.

Abstract

The fourth Glion Colloquium, which was held in Glion above Montreux, Switzerland, in june 2003, drew together active university leaders (presidents, rectors, vice-chancellors), along with guests from industry with close ties to academe, to compare perspectives on the future of the research university in America and Europe, as reflected in its title, "Reinventing the Research University". Although there was considerable discussion about whether it would be more accurate to use other verbs such as "reforming", "renewing" or "refocusing", there was general agreement that change would characterize the future of the research university, driven by powerful social, economic and technological forces driving change in our world.

Abstract

This work examines the current, relevant and complex problem of how companies can take an intellectual property lead within research and development collaborations. Special emphasis is placed on the early phases of the innovation process and the service industry sector in which intellectual property management is still a new phenomenon. The author derives archetypes for managing intellectual property in collaborations and analyses their strengths and weaknesses. The findings of the book are based on a series of interviews with companies in a variety of industries and regions, as well as on a detailed examination of the service companies IBM, SAP, Swisscom and SwissRe. The author offers organizational and managerial recommendations based both on his extensive industry background and on scientifically induced hypotheses, and has thus written a book of interest to both scientists and practitioners.

Abstract

In times of global markets, increasing competition and short product life cycles the effective and efficient management of industrial research and development (R&D) activities is of central importance for companies as well as for the whole economy. Traditionally the resources for R&D projects are allocated via planning- and budgeting procedures, evaluation methods and hierarchical decision-committees. This book presents resource allocation via internal markets as an alternative to such hierarchical decision procedures. It appears that the implementation of internal R&D markets has positive effects on the effectiveness and efficiency of internal R&D resource allocation processes. Internal R&D markets can help to overcome the weaknesses of traditional hierarchical structures, since they are characterised by short communication and decision procedures and thus contribute to the reduction of information asymmetries.

Abstract

The studies presented in this volume elaborate key issues related to the globalization of research and development and its implications for developing countries. Firms establish such operations in developing locations with the aim of accessing the skills of the host economies, adapting products to local markets and reducing their costs, in response to competitive pressures, technological changes and a more liberal trade and investment environment. The studies in this volume explore the implications of the recent rise of a number of developing economies as locations of important foreign direct investment projects in research and development. The issues addressed include the use of foreign direct investment versus contractual channels in acquiring innovative capacities in developing countries, the potential links of transnational corporationsþ research and development activities with the local innovation system of host countries, the likelihood of research and development spreading to new developing locations, and the kinds of host country policies that can facilitate diffusion of technologies from foreign affiliates activities to the local economy.
