Denial can stand in the way of individual well-being, and ideological denialism can stand in the way of good public policy. This text is a wide-ranging examination of denial and denialism. It offers a readable overview of the social psychology of denial, and examines the role of ideological denialism in conflicts over public policy, politics, and culture. Chapters focus on our philosophical and scientific understanding of denial, denial of scientific consensus, denialism in political economy, and denialism in religious belief. An afterword examines proposals for improving science communication in light of findings about motivated reasoning and denial.

For science communication to function competently, it needs to understand the attitudes and beliefs currently at play among its audiences. Among the currents of the contemporary noosphere are the fake news, conspiracy theories, and various forms of information distortion, both innocent and malign by design. This chapter examines various conceptual approaches to defining these forms of information distortion, develops a typology to incorporate many of the relevant key features and dimensions, and selectively reviews several lines of theoretical perspectives that elucidate the nature of such information and its credibility with audiences. The implications of developing better theoretical understandings of such dismisinformation are elaborated.

"How is official denial of the Armenian genocide maintained in Turkey? In this book, Hakan Seckinelgin investigates the mechanisms by which denial of the events of 1915 are reproduced in official discourse, and the effect this has on Turkish citizens. Examining state education, media discourse, academic publications, as well as public events debating the Armenian genocide, the book argues that, at the public level, there exists a 'grammar' or 'repertoire' of denial in Turkey which regulates how the issue can be publicly conceptualised and understood. The book's careful analysis examines the way that knowledge about the genocide is censored in Turkey, from the language that must be used to publicly discuss it, to the complex way in which selective knowledge and erased history is reproduced, from 1915 and subsequent generations until today. It argues that denialism has become important to a certain kind Turkish national identity and belonging - and suggests ways in which this relationship can be unpicked in future"--

"The effort to destroy facts and make America ungovernable didn't come out of nowhere. It is the culmination of seventy years of strategic denialism. Lee McIntyre shows how the war on facts began, and how ordinary citizens can fight back against the scourge of disinformation that is now threatening the very fabric of our society. Drawing on his twenty years of experience as a scholar of science denial, McIntyre explains how autocrats wield disinformation to manipulate a populace and deny obvious realities, why the best way to combat disinformation is to disrupt its spread, and most importantly, how we can win the war on truth"-- Provided by the publisher
