The recent explosion of new information about the pathology, pathophysiology, clinical classification, imaging, and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) has dramatically opened the way to a deeper understanding of the disease and a more effective therapeutic landscape for patients. In Multiple Sclerosis: Etiology, Diagnosis, and New Treatment Strategies, leading MS physicians synthesize current concepts about the evaluation, treatment, and future directions in MS. On the evaluation side, the authors review the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy, functional MRI, and three-dimensional MRI, and consider the rapidly developing body of pathologic information they have yielded. On the treatment side, the focus is on recently approved medications (Novantrone), new indications for medications (CHAMPS Trial), medications in development (Oral Interferon Tau, Oral Copaxone, and Oral Cellcept), immunosuppressive therapy for both progressive disease and symptomatic therapy; the current medications for treating relapsing-remitting MS (Avonex, Betaseron, and Copaxone) are also discussed. For future directions, the authors present the current best thinking, as well as the latest discoveries in immunology relating to MS, including groundbreaking B-cell research, its applications to specific immunotherapies, and the use of immune markers for tracking the disease. Additional chapters cover the mechanism and application of myelin repair, bone marrow transplantation, combination therapy, and specific immunomodulatory treatments. Comprehensive and up-to-date, Multiple Sclerosis: Etiology, Diagnosis, and New Treatment Strategies reviews all the current immunological, neuropsychological, imaging, and pregnancy issues associated with MS and shows how each is contributing to the still ongoing development of more efficacious therapies.

Progressive multiple sclerosis places a huge burden on individuals, carers and society and treatment options are currently limited. However, there have been significant recent advances in understanding progressive disease and this book draws the field together into a single, accessible, clinically focused text. Progressive Multiple Sclerosis sets out the basic science, pathology, epidemiology and treatment possibilities in progressive multiple sclerosis. The biological processes underlying disease progression are elucidated as are specific pathophysiological mechanisms. The basic science of axonal degeneration and the clinical understanding of progressive multiple sclerosis are discussed in the context of emerging and future therapies for disease progression as are trials which might be conducted for progressive multiple sclerosis. An overview of biomarkers for the disease is included and existing symptomatic therapies for progressive multiple sclerosis are covered in detail. Each chapter addresses specific aspects of progressive multiple sclerosis providing an extensive review of the current literature and a discussion of the likely mechanisms of tissue injury relevant to the disease. Progressive Multiple Sclerosis is ideal for both general neurologists and those with a specialist interest in multiple sclerosis. It will also be of interest to neurologists in training and other medical professionals treating this common disease. Dr Alastair Wilkins is Senior Lecturer in Neurology, University of Bristol, and Consultant Neurologist at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, UK. He researches axonal injury in multiple sclerosis and related disorders.

Clinical Neuroimmunology: Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders serves as an indispensable resource for physicians interested in, and dealing with, this very complex and evolving branch of neurology. This comprehensive title provides an introduction to basic neuroimmunology and principles of immunotherapy and also serves as a thorough guide to immune-mediated disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system, as well as other systemic disorders with a significant neuroimmunologic component. The chapters are written by experts in their fields and include the most up to date scientific information. This volume is made to simplify complex immunological mechanisms and to focus on practical patient-related issues. Clinical Neuroimmunology: Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders is an invaluable addition to the literature and will be of significant interest to neurologists, residents and fellows, internists, and general practitioners who treat patients with neurologic disorders and other systemic autoimmune diseases.
