Abstract

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the first ACM Workshop on the security implications of Deepfakes and Cheapfakes - WDC 2022, co-located with ACM AsiaCCS 2022. The workshop's mission is to share and discuss novel solutions to the security and privacy-related issues that arise from fake multimedia. A total of ten papers were submitted in response to the call for papers, with authors from four countries: Germany, Israel, South Korea, and the United States. The submissions' significance, novelty, technical quality, and field relevance were all considered. The review process was conducted in a double-blind fashion. The program committee members exerted considerable effort in evaluating the papers, with the majority receiving two or three reviews. Finally, we accepted four short papers with a 57.1% acceptance rate and three poster papers for presentation at the workshop.

Abstract

"Artificial intelligence"--the broad category of study exploring the creation of intelligent machines--has enjoyed a resurgence in the last decade, driven by a combination of research breakthroughs, a massive expansion in access to data, and advances in computational hardware. New developments and applications have captured the imagination of policymakers and the public at large, inspiring both hopes and fears around artificial intelligence and its future prospects. Among the many areas of concern around the technology, perhaps one of the most widely discussed has been the threat posed by "deepfakes": synthetic audio, images, and video generated with artificial intelligence. Deepfakes are often strikingly realistic and sometimes challenging to distinguish from the genuine article. Artificial intelligence has been used to produce deepfakes depicting prominent political figures from Donald Trump to Vladimir Putin saying a variety of things they never in fact said.

Abstract

This study deals with the growing trend of Russia's use of historical propaganda to further its foreign policy goals. It contains chapters written by experts in the field in the respective countries of Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Poland. The methodological aspects of the project were discussed in detail during a seminar in Riga on 11 December 2018. It was agreed that, for the integrity of the compendium, at least the central theme should be commonly understood as Jowett and O'Donnell conceptualise it: propaganda is a deliberate and systematic attempt to shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behaviour to achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the propagandist. Its systematic nature requires the longitudinal study of its progress. Because the essence of propaganda is its deliberateness of purpose, considerable investigation is required to find out what this purpose is.

Abstract

In early 2019 Katie Jones, a young researcher based in Washington DC, set up a new profile for herself on LinkedIn. She filled in her biographical details--degrees from the University of Michigan, a present position at the prestigious CSIS think tank--and set about building her network of contacts. There was nothing unusual about a new profile being set up on LinkedIn; thousands are created every day. It was not even unusual that Katie Jones was entirely fictitious; with no checks on the identity of individuals creating these profiles, there is nothing to prevent someone from assuming any identity they choose.

Abstract

Deepfakes is a synthetic media that leverage powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to generate fake visual and audio content that are extremely realistic, thus making it very hard for a human to distinguish from the original ones. Apart from technological introduction to the Deepfakes concept, the book details algorithms to detect Deepfakes, techniques for identifying manipulated content and identifying face swap, generative adversarial neural networks, media forensic techniques, deep learning architectures, forensic analysis of DeepFakes and so forth.Provides a technical introduction to DeepFakes, its benefits, and the potential harmsPresents practical approaches of creation and detection of DeepFakes using Deep Learning (DL) TechniquesDraws attention towards various challenging issues and societal impact of DeepFakes with their existing solutionsIncludes research analysis in the domain of DL fakes for assisting the creation and detection of DeepFakes applicationsDiscusses future research directions with emergence of DeepFakes technologyThis book is aimed at graduate students, researchers and professionals in data science, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and machine learning.

Abstract

Master the innovative world of deepfakes and generative AI for face replacement with this full-color guide Purchase of the print or Kindle book includes a free PDF eBook Key Features Understand what deepfakes are, their history, and how to use the technology ethically Get well-versed with the workflow and processes involved to create your own deepfakes Learn how to apply the lessons and techniques of deepfakes to your own problems Book Description Applying Deepfakes will allow you to tackle a wide range of scenarios creatively. Learning from experienced authors will help you to intuitively understand what is going on inside the model. You'll learn what deepfakes are and what makes them different from other machine learning techniques, and understand the entire process from beginning to end, from finding faces to preparing them, training the model, and performing the final swap. We'll discuss various uses for face replacement before we begin building our own pipeline. Spending some extra time thinking about how you collect your input data can make a huge difference to the quality of the final video. We look at the importance of this data and guide you with simple concepts to understand what your data needs to really be successful. No discussion of deepfakes can avoid discussing the controversial, unethical uses for which the technology initially became known. We'll go over some potential issues, and talk about the value that deepfakes can bring to a variety of educational and artistic use cases, from video game avatars to filmmaking. By the end of the book, you'll understand what deepfakes are, how they work at a fundamental level, and how to apply those techniques to your own needs. What you will learn Gain a clear understanding of deepfakes and their creation Understand the risks of deepfakes and how to mitigate them Collect efficient data to create successful deepfakes Get familiar with the deepfakes workflow and its steps Explore the application of deepfakes methods to your own generative needs Improve results by augmenting data and avoiding overtraining Examine the future of deepfakes and other generative AIs Use generative AIs to increase video content resolution Who this book is for This book is for AI developers, data scientists, and anyone looking to learn more about deepfakes or techniques and technologies from Deepfakes to help them generate new image data. Working knowledge of Python programming language and basic familiarity with OpenCV, Pillow, Pytorch, or Tensorflow is recommended to get the most out of the book.

Abstract

From deepfakes to GPT-3, deep learning is now powering a new assault on our ability to tell what's real and what's not, bringing a whole new algorithmic side to fake news. On the other hand, remarkable methods are being developed to help automate fact-checking and the detection of fake news and doctored media. Success in the modern business world requires you to understand these algorithmic currents, and to recognize the strengths, limits, and impacts of deep learning---especially when it comes to discerning the truth and differentiating fact from fiction. This book tells the stories of this algorithmic battle for the truth and how it impacts individuals and society at large. In doing so, it weaves together the human stories and what's at stake here, a simplified technical background on how these algorithms work, and an accessible survey of the research literature exploring these various topics. How Algorithms Create and Prevent Fake News is an accessible, broad account of the various ways that data-driven algorithms have been distorting reality and rendering the truth harder to grasp. From news aggregators to Google searches to YouTube recommendations to Facebook news feeds, the way we obtain information today is filtered through the lens of tech giant algorithms. The way data is collected, labelled, and stored has a big impact on the machine learning algorithms that are trained on it, and this is a main source of algorithmic bias which gets amplified in harmful data feedback loops. Dont be afraid: with this book youll see the remedies and technical solutions that are being applied to oppose these harmful trends. There is hope.

Abstract

This book examines the use and potential impact of deepfakes, a type of synthetic computer-generated media, primarily images and videos, capable of both creating artificial representations of non-existent individuals and showing actual individuals doing things they did not do. As such, deepfakes pose an obvious threat of manipulation and, unsurprisingly, have been the subject of a great deal of alarmism in both the news media and academic articles. Hence, this book sets out to critically evaluate potential threats by analyzing human susceptibility to manipulation and using that as a backdrop for a discussion of actual and likely uses of deepfakes.
