Abstract

Founded in 2009, R-Group (Reno-Solutions) is a group of companies based in Liège (Belgium) and active in the sectors of construction and renovation, with an emphasis on improving the energy consumption of buildings. With activities spread around southern and central Belgium, the group has been experiencing a significant and sustained growth that drives it towards a continuous professionalization of its management. In this framework, the main objective of this project-thesis was to analyze the efficiency of the tools and processes currently implemented in the main company of the group in order to collect, manage and store the financial information generated by its activities, and subsequently implement a new financial reporting tool in order to help the management to retrieve valuable insights from this information and use these as decision keys. The first step of this project consisted in obtaining a deep understanding of the cost structure of the company alongside with its financial information management processes. This first step helped us uncover several vulnerabilities of the system, such as the lack of an appropriate tool for the recording of structural costs, or the lack of a clear vision on the profitability of each department that composes the organization. After addressing the first through the implementation of a new module in the ERP, we then followed two work axes identified during the analysis in order to address the second. The first axis consisted in the implementation of a profitability table in the ERP, allowing any member of the management team to obtain a condensed summary of each department’s financial performance, while the second consisted in the development and implementation of a suite of financial dashboards using a data visualization solution. Both axes were addressed in this project, resulting in an enhanced vision on the financial results of the organization. Finally, we performed a short analysis of the results of the first quarter of 2020 using the newly implemented financial dashboards. This latter illustrated both the benefits and limitations of the tool and helped us identify further perspectives of evolution such as the development of a similar tool for supporting the profitability analysis of a selection of construction sites and the extension of the tools developed in this project to the remaining operational entities that compose the group.

Abstract

Over-pumping of aquifers is a worldwide problem, mainly caused by agricultural water use. Among its consequences are the falling dry of streams and wetlands, soil subsidence, die-off of phreatophytic vegetation, saline water intrusion, increased pumping cost and loss of storage needed for drought relief. Stopping or reversing the trend requires management interventions. The North China Plain serves as an example. A management system is set up for a typical county. It contains three components: monitoring, decision support based on modelling, and implementation in the field. Besides all monitoring data, the decision support module contains an irrigation calculator, a box model, and a distributed groundwater model to project the outcomes of different water allocation scenarios. In view of grain security, a solution combines an adaptation of the cropping system with imports of surface water from the South. The Open Access book does not only describe the problem and the path to its solution. It also gives access to nine manuals concerning methods used. They include computer programs and the game Save the Water. The Chinese experience should be of considerable interest to other regions in the world which suffer from over-pumping of aquifers.

Abstract

This edited book contains twelve studies, large and pilots, in five main categories: (i) adaptive imputation to increase the density of clinical data for improving downstream modeling; (ii) machine-learning-empowered diagnosis models; (iii) machine learning models for outcome prediction; (iv) innovative use of AI to improve our understanding of the public view; and (v) understanding of the attitude of providers in trusting insights from AI for complex cases. This collection is an excellent example of how technology can add value in healthcare settings and hints at some of the pressing challenges in the field. Artificial intelligence is gradually becoming a go-to technology in clinical care; therefore, it is important to work collaboratively and to shift from performance-driven outcomes to risk-sensitive model optimization, improved transparency, and better patient representation, to ensure more equitable healthcare for all.

Abstract

Landscapes have long been viewed as ‘multifunctional’, integrating ecological, economic, sociocultural, historical, and aesthetic dimensions. Landscape science and public awareness in Europe have been progressing in leaps and bounds. The challenges involved in landscape-related issues and fields, however, are multiple and refer to landscape stewardship and protection, as well as to the development of comprehensive theoretical and methodological approaches, in tandem with public sensitization and participatory governance and in coordination with appropriate top-down planning and policy instruments. Landscape-scale approaches are fundamental to the understanding of past and present cultural evolution, and are now considered to be an appropriate spatial framework for the analysis of sustainability. Methods and tools of landscape analysis and intervention have also gone a long way since their early development in Europe and the United States. Although significant progress has been made, there remain many issues which are understudied or not investigated at all—at least in a Mediterranean context. This Special Issue addresses the application of landscape theory and practice in the Eastern Mediterranean and mainly, but not exclusively, reports on the outcomes of an international conference held in Jordan, in December 2015, with the title “Landscapes of Eastern Mediterranean: Challenges, Opportunities, Prospects and Accomplishments”. The focus of this Special Issue, landscapes of the Eastern Mediterranean region, thus constitutes a timely area of research interest, not only because these landscapes have so far been understudied, but also as a rich site of strikingly variegated, long-standing multicultural human–environmental interactions. These interactions, resting on and taking shape through millennia of continuity in tradition, have been striving to adapt to technological advances, while currently juggling with manifold and multilayered socioeconomic and climate–environmental crises.
