Abstract

Jeroen de Rijke (1970-2006) and Willem de Rooij (b. 1969) have worked together since 1994. Their work revolves around representation problems relating to artistic and media images, cultural-historical artefacts and socio-political forms. The two artists produce films and photographs, using the "beauty" of familiar compositional and formal principles and the tempting projection surface this provides for us. de Rijke/de Rooij's images are always disturbing because they usually concentrate on a single take, action or object; reduced image distillations intensify doubts over "the image", initiating a discourse about our culturally driven readings of phenomena, about how we use images and how they affect us.

Abstract

Since 1994, the Dutch artists Jeroen de Rijke (°1970) & Willem de Rooij (°1969) have been collaborating on a comprehensive oeuvre of films. This artist's book focuses on their last four 35-mm films (1998-2002), paying particular attention to the growing importance of the phenomenological and iconographic aspects of their work. In addition it illustrates specific exhibition situations in a visual manifesto of their artistic thinking, complemented by enlightening essays by Diedrich Diederichsen and Georg Schöllhammer, and detailed descriptions of the four films.

Abstract

Documentary practices make up one of the most significant and complex tendencies within art during the last two decades. Traditional documentary photography and film have been reinvented and reinvigorated by merging with traditions such as video, performance, and conceptual art. Such recent documentary works attest to a new diversity and complexity of forms, ranging from conceptual mockumentaries to reflexive photo essays, from split-screen slide shows to found-footage video reportage, from installations without any lens-based medium to printed matter. Many of them are about searching for suitable forms and methods for discussing social content, whether historical material or effects of recent political and economic upheaval. This anthology seeks to overcome the existing dispersion of texts on documentary practices and offer new perspectives on this crucial theme.
