Abstract

Published to coincide with Berlinde De Bruyckere's participation in the 2013 Biennale di Venezia, this catalogue is the result of an extraordinary encounter between the Flemish artist and the writer J.M. Coetzee. De Bruyckere - a major figure in the contemporary art scene - found passion and fierce beauty in the unpublished writings of the acclaimed South African writer. The publication is also graced with a contribution by the Belgian writer Herman Parret. His magnificent explorations lead us to the discovery of a central figure in the history of the Venetian Republic: Saint Sebastian. Venice's quintessential symbol embodies the dual incarnation of sensuality and mystical suffering, an allegory for love and passion. The saint takes on particularly significance in relation to Berlinde De Bruyckere's work, on display at the Belgian pavilion. Exhibition: 2013 Biennale di Venezia, Venice, Italy (1.6.-24.11.2013).

Abstract

Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition at MO.CO. (Montpellier Contemporary) brings together some sixty works produced between 1999 and 2022. Exploring all his favourite media (sculptures, installations, drawings, watercolours and collages), it takes over the entire space. The selection includes six new works created specifically for MO.CO.Although martyrdom, redemption and metamorphosis are well-known themes in Berlinde De Bruyckere’s work, the exhibition also focuses on lesser-known aspects such as eroticism, the relationships and hybridisations of human, plant and animal, and the notions of work and exploitation.Berlinde De Bruyckere’s exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue published for the occasion in French and English. The graphic design was entrusted to the studio Tout va bien. It includes previously unpublished contributions by the South African writer and poet Antjie Krog and Numa Hambursin, general director of MO.CO., as well as an interview between the artist and the curators, Vincent Honoré, Anna Kerekes and Rahmouna Boutayeb.

Abstract

Taxidermy, once the province of natural history and dedicated to the pursuit of lifelike realism, has recently resurfaced in the world of contemporary art, culture, and interior design. In Speculative Taxidermy, Giovanni Aloi offers a comprehensive mapping of the discourses and practices that have enabled the emergence of taxidermy in contemporary art. Drawing on the speculative turn in philosophy and recovering past alternative histories of art and materiality from a biopolitical perspective, Aloi theorizes speculative taxidermy: a powerful interface that unlocks new ethical and political opportunities in human-animal relationships and speaks to how animal representation conveys the urgency of addressing climate change, capitalist exploitation, and mass extinction.A resolutely nonanthropocentric take on the materiality of one of the most controversial mediums in art, this approach relentlessly questions past and present ideas of human separation from the animal kingdom. It situates taxidermy as a powerful interface between humans and animals, rooted in a shared ontological and physical vulnerability. Carefully considering a select number of key examples including the work of Nandipha Mntambo, Maria Papadimitriou, Mark Dion, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Roni Horn, Oleg Kulik, Steve Bishop, Snæbjörnsdóttir/Wilson, and Cole Swanson, Speculative Taxidermy contextualizes the resilient presence of animal skin in the gallery space as a productive opportunity to rethink ethical and political stances in human-animal relationships.
