Vrijwel iedereen die werkzaam is in de gezondheidszorg en de hulpverlening, komt in aanraking met de Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). De DSM helpt als naslagwerk bij het terugvinden van criteria, waarmee de betrouwbaarheid van de diagnose wordt vergroot. In 2000 is in Nederland de Beknopte handleiding bij de Diagnostische Criteria van de DSM-IV-TR verschenen (waarbij TR voor tekstrevisie staat). Op verzoek van de American Academy of Sleep Medicine is in deze derde druk een aantal nieuwe codenummers voor de slaapstoornissen ingevoerd in de DSM-IV-TR. De vertaling van de DSM-IV-TR is tot stand gekomen in overleg met de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Psychiatrie.
