Abstract

Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways. Its frequency and severity vary greatly from one person to another. This disease is defined by repetitive crises manifested by breathing difficulties and wheezing. In a crisis, the bronchial wall becomes inflamed and swells, causing a significant decrease in bronchia l diameter and therefore reduces the air flow both inhaled and exhaled. The management of asthma patients based on both non-pharmacological advice as well as customized and adequate drug treatment. These will most often inhaled medicines, developed by numerous studies before being placed on the market, targeting the distal airways. What do we mean by that? What about effectiveness? Superfine particles, what does that mean? Here are some questions that this memory will attempt to provide answers: analyzing pathology, based on the pharmacological properties of treatments and clinical studies.

Abstract

Nano- or micro-encapsulation is used in many different fields and industries, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food, and agrochemicals. It offers advantages for various applications, especially drug delivery. Nano-encapsulation can help extend and control the release of drugs as well as increase drug bioavailability and efficacy. It improves the precision of targeted drug delivery and allows for fabricating nano-encapsulated drugs for diagnostic and theranaostic applications. This book covers recent advances in fabricating nano-/micro-capsules using natural carriers for therapeutic and diagnostic drug delivery applications as well as rheology and formulations of micro-emulsions for diverse applications. This book is essential for scientists and researchers with diverse backgrounds in chemistry, engineering, material sciences, pharmaceuticals, and drug delivery.

Abstract

Conventional drug administration has several issues and challenges. Drugs may not be fully absorbed or targeted, some drugs produce undesirable secondary effects and cause organ damage, and others trigger inflammation and immune response. As such, drug carrier systems are being developed to help promote drug absorption, enhance targeting, and avoid or decrease negative symptoms. This book examines different drug carriers and drug carrier systems. Chapters address such topics as the use of polymers in drug carrier systems, thin films, metal-organic frameworks, graphene quantum dots, and nanotechnology and microfluidics for drug delivery.

Abstract

Knowledge of the different elements that determine the optimal method for drug loading and delivery nanosystems using nanoparticles of different natures is experiencing a remarkable boom in many scientific fields, especially in medicine, chemistry, biology, materials science and molecular biotechnology. Not only is it necessary to fully understand what type of nanoparticle is most appropriate in each particular situation, but the interactions of the used nanoparticle with the system under study and the analysis of the release process are important as well. To design nanoparticle drug delivery agents well, a high ratio of drug to nanoparticles must be achieved. Furthermore, biocompatibility and knowledge of the time that the release process takes are fundamental factors for the construction of operative NPs as drug delivery vectors. Today, efforts on the development of appropriate nanosystems are focused on producing new materials that release drugs in a sequential manner with different therapeutic efficacy. To achieve optimal results among researchers from various areas, this reprint of Nanomaterials will try to consider all of these key factors that need to be taken into account for nanosystems to be suitable for drug release. "New Avenues of Research for Nanoparticle Drug Delivery Systems" brings together the recent research articles published in Nanomaterials. Specifically, five original research articles, with one of them being a review, were published by authors from different countries on current issues in this field of research.

Abstract

Conventional ophthalmic formulations lack prolonged drug release effects and mucoadhesive properties, decreasing their residence time in the precorneal area and, therefore, in drug penetration across ocular tissues, presenting a low bioavailability with a consequent reduction in the therapeutic efficacy. These limitations are related to the physiological mechanisms of the eye, for example, the diluting effect of formulations exerted by the tear fluid, constant turnover of the tear fluid, blink reflex, limited capacity of the conjunctival sac, and drainage of formulations applied by gravity.
