Document Image Processing allows systems like OCR, writer identification, writer recognition, check processing, historical document processing, etc., to extract useful information from document images. What we call a document image ranges from images of historical documents written on various surfaces, to synthetic images (useful for creating datasets) and videos including text. In order to succeed, many preprocessing tasks can be required: document skew detection and correction, slant removal, binarization and segmentation procedures, as well as other normalization tasks. These low-level tasks are generally followed by high-level tasks such as the recognition or spotting of textual elements (characters, words, or text lines). The intent of this Special Issue is to collect the experiences of leading scientists of the field, but also to be an assessment tool for people who are new to the world of document image processing.

Présentation des concepts principaux et des composants des gestionnaires de bibliothèques numériques avant de décrire dix logiciels disponibles sur le marché français (Amanager, CERN, ORI-OAI, DuraSpace, Ex Libris, Naoned, OCLC...) et cinq plateformes de dépôt. Fonctionnalités, environnement technique, offre de services et prix pratiqués sont détaillés. Que ce soit à des fins patrimoniales, culturelles ou scientifiques, les projets de bibliothèques numériques se multiplient et suscitent de nombreux débats professionnels. Les enjeux sont en effet variés, en termes d'usage, de services innovants et de conquête de nouveaux publics. Les auteurs exposent les principes et composants fondamentaux des gestionnaires de bibliothèques numériques. Puis ils recensent dix solutions disponibles sur le marché français et en détaillent les fonctionnalités, l'environnement technique, l'offre de services et les prix pratiqués. This book continues first one of the same authors “Adaptive Image Processing Algorithms for Printing” and presents methods and software solutions for copying and scanning various types of documents by conventional office equipment, offering techniques for correction of distortions and enhancement of scanned documents; techniques for automatic cropping and de-skew; approaches for segmentation of text and picture regions; documents classifiers; approach for vectorization of symbols by approximation of their contour by curves; methods for optimal compression of scanned documents, algorithm for stitching parts of large originals; copy-protection methods by microprinting and embedding of hidden information to hardcopy; algorithmic approach for toner saving. In addition, method for integral printing is considered. Described techniques operate in automatic mode thanks to machine learning or ingenious heuristics. Most the techniques presented have a low computational complexity and memory consumption due to they were designed for firmware of embedded systems or software drivers. The book reflects the authors’ practical experience in algorithm development for industrial R&D. .
