Abstract

For over thirty years Thomas Ruff has approached every genre of photography and coolly reinvented it. One of the greatest artists to use photography in the 21st century, Ruff came of age in the 1980s alongside Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer and Thomas Struth, in what was to become known as the Dusseldorf School. Creating photographic images on the scale of history paintingbut with a cool hyperrealism, Ruff moves from the micro to the macro, from portraying friends to picturing the cosmos. He also oscillates between the laboratory and the archive, experimenting with digital technologies to create photograms with virtual objects and rescuing discarded press photographs to reveal lost histories.Unlike many other publications on his work which assess Ruff's work series by series, this catalogue provides a thematic exploration of his output including portraits, disasters, sky and cityscapes, internet nudes, photograms, manga images, magnetically generated images and found photographs.

Abstract

In his large-format colour photos Gursky usually portrays vast panoramic views: "complete" townscapes, "endless horizons", huge factory halls and packed rooms, frequently from a bird's eye view, always from a great distance. The people in these tableaux, reminiscent of the landscape paintings of romanticism in terms of composition and lighting, are reduced to the size of tiny decorative figures, whose "individuality" seems to drown in the "ornamentation of the masses." Devoid of any trace of reproach or intention to psychologize, Gursky's portraits of exteriors and interiors capturing scenes of work and leisure are subtle descriptions of the condition of our society. Abstract

In Digital Image Systems, Claus Gunti examines the antagonizing reactions to digital technologies in photography. While Thomas Ruff, Andreas Gursky and Jörg Sasse have gradually adopted digital imaging tools in the early 1990s, other photographers from the Düsseldorf School have remained faithful to film-based technologies. By evaluating the aesthetic and discursive preconditions of this situation and by extensively analyzing the digital work of these three photographers, this book shows that the digital turn in photography was anticipated by the conceptualization of images within systems, and thus offers new perspectives for understanding the »digital revolution«.

Abstract

How have digital technologies affected the truth claim of photography? What has been the artistic response to the technological and societal transformations the digital revolution has brought about? Claus Gunti explores the widespread implications of the digital in the work of renowned photographers of the Düsseldorf School, Thomas Ruff, Andreas Gursky and Jörg Sasse, stretching from ties to conceptual art to the development of a globalized visual culture. The study provides a model for understanding the digital revolution in photography and shows that it ought to be understood beyond a strictly technological perspective.
