Abstract

Abstract

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed noncutaneous neoplasm in men in the United States and is the second leading cause of cancer mortality. It poses diagnostic challenges in day-to-day practice in misdiagnosis of tumor-like lesions and secondary tumors. This book is a concise, practical guide to prostate pathology and is structured to guide pathologists, both practicing and trainees, in the diagnostic process. Numerous color images and algorithms show, in a practical manner, how to integrate pathologic and immunohistochemical features to reach a correct diagnosis in prostate tumors and tumor-like lesions. The book incorporates recent developments in biomarkers applied to immunohistochemistry, representing the best immunohistochemistry practice applied to current diagnosis of prostate cancer in biopsies and surgical specimens. It takes a multidisciplinary approach to the clinical management of prostate cancer and will also appeal to all healthcare professionals treating patients, particularly urologists, oncologists, biomedical scientists, and researchers. This book provides access to an online version on Cambridge Core, accessed via the code printed on the inside of the cover.

Abstract

Each volume in this richly illustrated series, published in association with the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology, provides an organ-based approach to the cytologic and histologic diagnosis of small tissue samples. Benign, pre-malignant and malignant entities are presented in a well-organized and standardized format, with high-resolution color photomicrographs, tables, and lists of key specific morphologic criteria. Example vignettes allow the reader to assimilate the diagnostic principles in a case-based format. This volume provides comprehensive coverage of both surgical pathology and cytopathology of focal liver lesions. Extensively illustrated throughout, it contains key cytologic and histologic features, practical points, radiologic and morphologic pictures, flow charts, and tabulated summaries for easy comprehensive overview and quick reference and provides a pragmatic algorithmic approach to cytohistologic diagnosis. With over 700 printed photomicrographs and a CD-ROM offering all images in a downloadable format, this is an important resource for all anatomic pathologists.

Abstract

This comprehensive yet practical text reviews the pathology of neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions of the pleura and peritoneum, with a particular focus on mesothelioma. The anatomy and embryology of serous membranes are discussed, and the causes, epidemiology, and clinical and radiologic features of malignant mesothelioma are reviewed. A comprehensive review of immunostains used for diagnosing serous membrane lesions is given, current treatment options for patients are outlined. The markers of asbestos exposure and their significance are also assessed. The pathology of non-neoplastic conditions of serous membranes, from peritoneal cysts and endometriosis to deciduosis and gliomatosis peritonei are also covered, as are lymphomas and soft tissue tumors in serous membranes. This makes Practical Pathology of Serous Membranes an essential resource for effective diagnosis.

Abstract

Each volume in this richly illustrated series, sponsored by the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology, provides an organ-based approach to the cytological and histological diagnosis of small tissue samples. Benign, pre-malignant and malignant entities are presented in a well-organized and standardized format, with high-resolution color photomicrographs, tables, tabulated specific morphologic criteria and appropriate ancillary testing algorithms. Example vignettes allow the reader to assimilate the diagnostic principles in a case-based format. This volume provides comprehensive coverage of lung and mediastinal cytopathology. It presents a correlation of findings from fine-needle aspiration and exfoliative cytology and histologic findings obtained via core needle biopsies and surgical specimens. With a focus on malignant tumors, the full spectrum of inflammatory disorders, infectious diseases, hyperplasias and benign tumor or tumor-like lesions are also covered in detail. With over 500 printed photomicrographs and a CD-ROM offering all images in a downloadable format, this is an important resource for all anatomic pathologists.

Abstract

Practical Head and Neck Cytopathology provides an engaging and holistic approach to the cytologic diagnosis of head and neck masses, covering both the technique of needle aspiration and its microscopic interpretation. A suitable sample is critical for arriving at the diagnosis and this book provides organ-specific tips on the FNA technique. Presence of different organs and structures in the head and neck region, as well as morphologic overlap amongst disparate entities, adds to the complexity of cytologic diagnosis. This book presents an easy-to-follow, stepwise approach to diagnosis, using concise bulleted text to highlight key features. Common and infrequently encountered mimics are included and interpretative challenges are discussed, facilitating a robust diagnosis. Numerous high-quality photomicrographs aid recognition of both common and rare features. A valuable resource for trainee and practising pathologists alike, this book is based on universally-used techniques and routinely prepared material, which are relevant to cytopathologists across the globe.

Abstract

Exfoliative and instrumented (catheterized) urines are the most common types of specimens evaluated in a cytology laboratory. The typical clinical presentation is a patient with new onset of urinary symptoms, asymptomatic hematuria, or patient with prior history of urothelial carcinoma on routine surveillance. A careful examination of exfoliated cells from the urinary tract can lead to a fast, relatively simple, economical and accurate cytopathologic diagnosis, which is crucial for timely patient management. However, there are a number of common non-neoplastic reactive conditions that can morp
