Abstract

Historiography traditionally accepts periodization which considered the First World War as an absolute watershed in the European history as a whole. This text, through a collection of essays by Italian and foreign specialists, seeks to investigate the premises and the results of the First World War in a vast area ranging from the Balkans to the Caucasus normally underrated by historiography, focusing on a series of problems (of ethnic, cultural or political character) which due to their complexity must be faced in an overall framework that takes into account the pre-war period and the first two decades of the twentieth century. The works reveal a very complex and stimulating picture, which leads us to reflect on long-term events and problems that involved all the countries that participated to the regional events, full of consequences for the peoples who lived there.

Abstract

The demonstrations of monks in Tibet and Myanmar (Burma) in recent times as well as the age-old conflict between a predominantly Buddhist population and a Hindu minority in Sri Lanka raise the question of how the issues of human rights and Buddhism are related. The question applies both to the violation of basic rights in Buddhist countries and to the defence of those rights which are well-grounded in Buddhist teachings. The volume provides academic essays that reflect this up to now rather neglected issue from the point of view of the three main Buddhist traditions, Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. It provides multi-faceted and surprising insights into a rather unlikely relationship. »[The] transdisciplinary, transcultural, and transreligious approach is the strong point of this book.« Gudula Linck, Internationales Asienforum, 3-4 (2011)

Abstract

"In the wake of the conquests of Alexander the Great, the ancient world of the Bible--the ancient Near East--came under Greek rule, and in the land of Israel, time-old traditions and Greek culture met. But with the accession of King Antiochus IV, the soft power of culture was replaced with armed conflict, and soon the Jews rebelled against their imperial masters, as recorded in the Biblical books of Maccabees. Whereas most scholars have dismissed the Biblical accounts of religious persecution and cultural clash, Sylvie Honigman combines subtle literary analysis with deep historical insight to show how their testimony can be reconciled with modern historical analysis by learning to converse with the biblical authors, so to speak, in their own language to understand the way they described their own experiences. Honigman contents that their stories are not mere fantasies but genuine attempts to cope with the massacre that followed the rebellion by giving it new meaning. This reading also discloses fresh political and economic factors"--
