An interdisciplinary study of issues of language manipulation, this book explores the interpretation stage of critical discourse analysis (CDA) for students in areas such as English language, media studies and applied linguistics, as well as practitioners in the field. It also offers a new way forward for highlighting manipulative language, accomplishing this through the innovation of a model of reading for gist. The model is an original synthesis of elements from four contemporary cognitive frameworks: connectionism, cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistic evidence on inference generation, and relevance theory. Significantly, Kieran O'Halloran also shows how each of these frameworks challenges current notions of cognition in CDA and he carefully works through the implications of this for how CDA highlights manipulative language.Key FeaturesShows clearly how more systematic and reliable prediction can be made as to whether a news text is likely to manipulate someone reading for gistProvides accessible outlines of connectionism, cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistic research on inference generation, relevance theory, which assume no previous knowledgeBrings together contemporary linguistic and cognitive approaches which usually do not communicateProvides a useful overview of how language cognition is understood in CDA, revealing tensions in this understanding. In offering novel criticism of some key aspects of CDA and in suggesting ways in which critical analyses of news texts can be improved, this book is likely to be both topical and controversial.

"This volume examines the notion of criticality in language studies. Drawing on the work of the Frankfurt School - Adorno and Horkheimer, Marcuse, Habermas, among others - the essays in the volume examines a variety of linguistic contexts: from gender activism to web journalism, from the classroom to the open streets. It also presents theoretical and methodological guidelines to researchers interested in; expanding their critical outlook for meaning brought on by the notion of criticality in contemporary language studies; understanding criticality in languages through from historical, political, and social perspectives; using linguistics and language studies as tools to dissect and disclose social injustices. This book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of language studies and linguistics, philosophy, politics, and sociology and social policy"--

"This book sheds light on the different ways language can be used for different outcomes. Machin and Mayr examine how discourses signify ideas, values and identities through implicit and complex semiotic choices. With a focus on a multimodal approach such as Images, tables and case studies, the book guides students to an understanding of how subtle plays of co-operation, negotiation and deception are played out in everyday media texts. The book is approachable and accessible for social science and linguistic students, with a focus on using material to design projects and help answers your specific questions. Alongside this, the diverse range of methodological approaches such as Appraisal Theory and Conversation Analysis will allow you to gain a wider understanding into Critical Discourse Analysis and understand the relationship between language and social practices. Addressing communication in our post-modern society, the book has a unique and compelling point of view of contemporary examples of Critical Discourse Analysis but never oversimplifies it"--

In this book, Christopher Hart provides a comprehensive description of an applied form of Cognitive Linguistics in Cognitive Critical Discourse Analysis (Cognitive CDA). Cognitive CDA applies frameworks in cognitive linguistics in analyses of political texts and talk to highlight the ideological qualities and legitimating functions of conceptualisations associated with dominant discourse practices. Across the ten lectures, various frameworks in cognitive linguistics are applied, including cognitive grammar, conceptual semantics, conceptual metaphor theory and discourse space theory. Texts and talk from a variety of contexts and genres are analysed. In the final two lectures, Cognitive CDA is extended to multimodal data in the form of images and gestures.
