Admittedly engineers simply continue to calculate the projects they are given by architects, but engineers also draw or redraw, build physical models or design digital models for parametrisation, gauge aesthetics and reinvent the production of the form. Is it the architect or the engineer who designs the structure, lays its foundations and establishes the intentionality of the project? The examples covered in the pages of this book show us that creativity lies at the heart of engineering practice and a structure's design. It also shows that engineering today is a space of freedom and that it is enough to want to be part of it, to give us the means, to ask us the right questions, for us to invent the new structural landscapes of tomorrow. This book is different in that projects are presented from the point of view of their genesis and their design.

Structure as Space is a monograph on the work of the innovative Swiss engineer Jurg Conzett, who has been instrumental in redefining the relationship between structural engineering and architecture. This volume illustrates Conzett's own exquisite designs, such as his granite stress-ribbon Suransuns Bridge, as well as his collaborations with Switzerland's leading architects, among them Peter Zumthor and Meili & Peter. These works are presented in "manual" form, providing the reader with a guide to the secrets underlying the development of each structure. Each project is documented with drawings and structural diagrams as well as photographs. Texts by J rg Conzett, Mohsen Mostafavi, and Bruno Reichlin explore the relation of engineering to architecture and the impact of engineering infrastructures on the natural environment.

"Rising dramatically above the spectacular Swiss landscape surrounding the well-known resort Flims ? Laax ? Falera, Jürg Conzett's unique mountain trail contains seven bridges crossing a wild stream. An internationally renowned civil engineer, Conzett has brought his considerable talent and experience to this project and the results are groundbreaking and visually appealing. Each bridge uses a different type of construction and building method depending on the specific geographic features of its location. Wilfried Dechau has catalogued the project with over one-hundred previously unpublished images of the bridges and their surrounding landscape. His atmospheric photographs provide readers with a beautiful and up-close look at both the striking architecture amid the beautiful wilderness. Also included in this book are sketches and plans by Conzett and a series of essays by Dechau, Conzett, Ursula Baus, Christian Dettwiler, and Jürg Marquart"--University of Chicago Press.
