Abstract

Many daily purchase decisions, such as choosing the best deal, require the integration of various kinds of information. In most commercial scenarios the consumer has to manage and compare numerical information. The present study is driven by an important research question: “in a commercial scenario with a high numerical component, is numerical ability (e.g. numeracy) the only factor that influences the accuracy of decisions?”. The aim of the present paper is to understand if cognitive reflection drives the problem-solving process in these contexts. We examined attentional aspects by measuring eye movements using an SR Research Eye Link 1000 eye tracking device belonging to The Consumer Neuroscience Laboratory (ncLab) located at The University of Trento.

Abstract

Nowadays, with, among other things, new technologies and the phenomenon of programmed obsolescence, electronic waste is constantly increasing despite the existence of alternatives to reduce it. Smartphones, like any other electronic device, generate a waste stream that is harmful to the planet but also to the people who inhabit it. Nevertheless, the components of these devices are a valuable resource for manufacturers. Indeed, remanufacturing is a business opportunity for manufacturers due to the lower cost of production, but also for consumers who want a product that performs and looks like its new counterpart. This process helps preserve the environment by giving a second life to products, thus paving the way for a circular economy. However, consumers still tend to think that these products are inferior to their new counterparts.

In order to obtain a global view of the factors influencing consumers' remanufactured smartphone purchase decision process, this work was first conducted through existing studies and research in the literature on the exact definition of a remanufactured product, consumers' purchase behavior, and their perception of remanufactured products. Next, a quantitative analysis was conducted online with the goal of understanding the effect of factors identified in the literature as influencing the purchase decision process.

Abstract

In recent years, the increasing consumer concern towards food safety, environmental sustainability and social justice issues have stimulated new consumption practices more oriented towards social, economic and environmental sustainability. These include the growing consumers' preferences towards organic food, local food, and other sustainable foods and beverages consumption, as well as the spread of alternative distribution chains, which emphasize the short-distance transportation of food and the direct relationship between consumers and producers. In addition, these sustainable consumption practices seem also to involve tourist destination choices, rural tourism and gastronomy interest. This Special Issue aims to contribute to the literature on sustainable consumption practices by enriching discussions on consumers experiences and by emphasizing the motivational and demographic factors as well as the cultural and situational factors that guide consumer behaviour towards these practices.

Abstract

Over the past few decades, modern information technology has made a significant impact on people’s daily lives worldwide. In the field of health care and prevention, there has been a progressing penetration of assistive health services such as personal health records, supporting apps for chronic diseases, or preventive cardiological monitoring. In 2020, the range of personal health services appeared to be almost unmanageable, accompanied by a multitude of different data formats and technical interfaces. The exchange of health-related data between different healthcare providers or platforms may therefore be difficult or even impossible. In addition, health professionals are increasingly confronted with medical data that were not acquired by themselves, but by an algorithmic “black box”. Even further, externally recorded data tend to be incompatible with the data models of classical healthcare information systems. From the individual’s perspective, digital services allow for the monitoring of their own health status. However, such services can also overwhelm their users, especially elderly people, with too many features or barely comprehensible information. It therefore seems highly relevant to examine whether such “always at hand” services exceed the digital literacy levels of average citizens. In this context, this reprint presents innovative, health-related applications or services emphasizing the role of user-centered information technology, with a special focus on one of the aforementioned aspects.

Abstract

The purpose of the Special Issue was to collect the results of research and experience on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for the energy sector and the energy market, broadly understood, that were visible after a year. In particular, the impact of COVID-19 on the energy sector in the EU, including Poland, and the US was examined. The topics concerned various issues, e.g., the situation of energy companies, including those listed on the stock exchange, mining companies, and those dealing with renewable energy. The topics related to the development of electromobility, managerial competences, energy expenditure of local government units, sustainable development of energy, and energy poverty during a pandemic were also discussed.
