In light of increased demands for resource-saving, long-lasting, and low-maintenance buildings, the potential of solid construction methods is coming back into focus. This publication takes a closer look at building with solid, serially produced components and elements using various construction methods and solutions, discussing both the joining of elements and components as well as the structure of the building itself. Each element is examined with regard to its specific function and its contribution to the wall system. The publication evaluates traditional and contemporary design and manufacturing techniques and promotes responsible approaches to the future use of materials and modular elementary systems. Thus, the book is a perfect reference work for architects and students. The first part of the book includes contributions discussing a variety of topics, from reflections on state-of-the-art developments to experimental building practices along with applications of building materials such as unfired clay bricks, the use of different stone dimensions and the role of solid building envelopes. These different findings are illustrated using examples of brick buildings from the Ghent and Leuven region in Belgium and the use of solid stone blocks in a residential building project in Geneva, expanding our understanding of elemental masonry construction. The second part of the book features selected architectural works analyzed by students from the EAST design studio. This graphical study of exemplary projects offers an instructive overview of the constructive and climatic connections of the case studies. (Éditeur)

This edited volume follows the panel “Earth in Islamic Architecture” organised for the World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES) in Ankara, on the 19th of August 2014. Earthen architecture is well-known among archaeologists and anthropologists whose work extends from Central Asia to Spain, including Africa. However, little collective attention has been paid to earthen architecture within Muslim cultures. This book endeavours to share knowledge and methods of different disciplines such as history, anthropology, archaeology and architecture. Its objective is to establish a link between historical and archaeological studies given that Muslim cultures cannot be dissociated from social history.

Terra Europae - Earthen Architecture in the European Union is a scientific publication, resulting from an intensive and valued teamwork of 50 authors that generated exclusive maps and texts from different regions and countries of the European Union. The outcomes were systematically and consistently combined to create a relevant overview of the state-of-art of earthen architecture in Europe. The publication opens with a photography summary of earthen historical heritage and contemporary architecture in Europe today. It presents an overview of 7 European regions, complemented by 27 articles from all European Union countries. To complete this broad publication, and as a result of the scientifi c missions, a comprehensive cartography of European earthen heritage is offered. This book is the result of a common effort gathered by Ecole d'Avignon (France), Escola Superior Gallaecia (Portugal), Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain), Università degli Studi di Firenze (Italy) and CAUE-Conseil d'Architecture, d'Urbanisme et de l'Environnement of Vaucluse (France). European partners in the Culture 2007-2013 programme, through the Terra [In]cognita research project developed between 2009 and 2011. The project gathered experts that contributed to create an awareness of their country's heritage and brought inspiration to launch research, to go beyond and to discover the unrevealed European earthen heritage and contemporary earthen architecture.
