La population de Saint-Barthélemy (à peine plus de 2 000 habitants) installée sur un territoire insulaire exigu est l'une des plus endogames qui se puisse observer. Ce groupe humain est morcelé, d'abord en deux sous-ensembles « Au Vent » et « Sous le Vent » qui n'ont pratiquement aucun échange entre eux, eux-mêmes subdivisés en quartiers bien individualisés, à peine plus ouverts. Il en découle un nombre de mariages, entre apparentés très important et cette forte consanguinité n'est pas sans risque pathologique. Grâce à des archives de qualité (paroisses, état civil, recensements) attentivement dépouillées, des études généalogiques nombreuses et précises permettent de constater que cette endogamie est très ancienne et a su résister à la période suédoise (1784-1878). En sera-t-il de même dans l'avenir avec l'afflux du tourisme et l'ouverture vers l'extérieur ?. The Roots and Destiny of a Population. The population of Saint Barthélemy (barely more than 2,000 inhabitants), settled on a tiny island territory, is one of the most endogamous that can be found. This human group is divided, first into two sub-groups. "Windward" and "Leeward"-which maintain practically no communication between themselves, and, secondly, these groups are in turn subdivided into quite distinct sectors, hardly any more open. The result is that there are a considerable number of marriages among family members, and this high degree of consanguinity involves a future pathological situation. Thanks to archives of a high order (parishes, civilian records, census takings) that have been carefully sifted, quite a number of geneological studies have been made which enable to realize that the endogamous situation is of long date and managed to survive the Swedish period (1784-1878). Will the same be the case in the future with the arrival of tourists and an opening towards the outside world ?.
