Abstract

This volume is a collection of essays on medieval Spain, written by leading scholars on three continents, that celebrates the career of Thomas F. Glick. Using a wide array of innovative methodological approaches, these essays offer insights on areas of medieval Iberian history that have been of particular interest to Glick: irrigation, the history of science, and cross-cultural interactions between Jews, Christians, and Muslims. By bringing together original research on topics ranging from water management and timekeeping to poetry and women’s history, this volume crosses disciplinary boundaries and reflects the wide-ranging, gap-bridging work of Glick himself, a pivotal figure in the historiography of medieval Spain.

The book investigates the role of psychology as a science in times of crisis, discusses how socio-political change affects the discipline and profession, and renders psychological interventions as forms of political action. The authors examine how notions of crisis and the interpretation of crisis scenarios are heavily intertwined with governmental and state interests. Seeking to disentangle individual subjectivity, subjectification, and science as forms of politics, the volume works toward an explicit goal to decolonize psychology. The chapters elaborate on the importance of the psychological sciences in times of crisis and the role of psychologists as practitioners. Irene Strasser is Assistant Professor at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. Her research focuses on lifespan development and cultural psychology with an emphasis on adult development and aging. Her work is informed by critical gerontological perspectives, social justice studies, and qualitative approaches. Martin Dege is Assistant Professor of Narrative Inquiry at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, USA. His research investigates how crisis experiences shape our everyday lives and the narratives we tell. He is also interested in the history of psychology as a discipline.

Abstract

This book explores the issues of education, the use of languages and the formation of self-identification of the Japanese and Korean diasporas of Sakhalin, over a hundred years period: from the time they moved to the island, until their “return” to historical homelands in Japan or South Korea. During this time, their language environment and language of education changed 4 times and Japanese and Korean of Sakhalin continued to be a linguistic and ethnic minority. This book is of interest to researchers, students, NGO supporters and education policy makers.
