Abstract

This book describes, analyzes, and recommends traffic engineering (TE) and quality of service (QoS) optimization methods for integrated voice/data dynamic routing networks. These functions control a network's response to traffic demands and other stimuli, such as link failures or node failures. TE and QoS optimization is concerned with measurement, modeling, characterization, and control of network traffic, and the application of techniques to achieve specific performance objectives. The scope of the analysis and recommendations include dimensioning, call/flow and connection routing, QoS resou

Abstract

Rapid advances in communication technology have created the possibility of large-scale control systems with distribution of control tasks among several processors via communication channels. Such control systems may be distributed over large distances and may use large numbers of actuators and sensors. The possibility of such networked control systems has motivated the development of a new chapter in control theory in which control and communication issues are integrated, and all the limitations of communication channels are considered. Although there is an emerging literature on this topic, this is the first book that attempts to present a systematic theory of estimation and control over communication networks. Using several selected problems of estimation and control over communication networks, the authors present and prove a number of results concerning optimality, stability, and robustness having practical significance for networked control system design. In particular, various problems of Kalman filtering, stabilization, and optimal control over communication channels are considered and solved. The results establish fundamental links among mathematical control theory, Shannon information theory, and entropy theory of dynamical systems. Key features and topics of the work: * Offers accessible but precise development of important mathematical models and results * Covers estimation and stabilization of both linear and nonlinear systems * Addresses limited capacity communication channels, noisy discrete channels, systems with disturbances, irregular transmission times, and switched sensors * Presents state-of-the-art developments and cutting-edge results in the field This essentially self-contained monograph offers accessible mathematical models and results for advanced postgraduate students, researchers, and practitioners working in the areas of control engineering, communications, information theory, signal processing, and applied mathematics who have an interest in the emerging field of networked control systems.

Abstract

This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series contains the set of papers accepted for publication at the colocated QofIS/ICQT 2002 workshops, i.e. the 3rd COST Action 263 International Workshop on Quality of future Internet Services (QofIS) and the 2nd International Workshop on Internet Charging and QoS Technology (ICQT), both of which took place at the ETH Zric h, Switzerland, hosted by the Computer Engineering and Networking Laboratory, TIK. QofIS 2002 was the third in a series of highly successful technical workshops and meetings on Internet services within the framework of the COST Action 263 Q uality of future Internet Services , following previous events in Berlin, Germany in 2000 and in Coimbra, Portugal in 2001. ICQT 2002 was the follow-up to a vivid and extremely well-attended workshop on Internet economics and charging technology that took place within the framework of the Annual Meeting of the German Society for Computer Science (GI) and the Austrian Computer Society in 2001 in Vienna, Austria.

Abstract

The 2001 International Workshop on Quality of future Internet Services (QofIS 2001) held in Coimbra, Portugal, organized by COST Action 263, is the second of what we expect will become a series of successful QofIS workshops. The previous workshop was held in Berlin in the year 2000. The areas of interest of QofIS cover the design, implementation and provision of Quality of Service, spanning key issues of current and emerging communication systems such as packet-level issues, flow-level issues, network-level issues, architectural issues, and applications. The emphasis of the QofIS2001 w orkshop is on horizontal (end-to-end) as well as vertical (top-down) provision of quality of services, covering all components of end systems and networks, with the aim of identifying solutions enabling feasible and coherent QoS provision. The QofIS2001 cal l for papers attracted 87 submissions from 23 Asian, Australian, European, North American, and South American countries. These were subject to thorough review work by the Programme Committee members and additional reviewers who carried out their work using a specially built conference system, WebChairing, developed in Coimbra by Flor de Utopia, that allowed full control of the submission and reviewing processes. Based on the comments and recommendations of the reviews, the final programme was defined in a Programme th Committee meeting held at the University of Karlsruhe on June 5 , 2001.

Abstract

Over the past three decades, the Internet's rapid growth has spurred the development of new applications in mobile computing, digital music, online video, gaming and social networks. These applications rely heavily upon various underlying network protocols and mechanisms to enable, maintain and enhance their Internet functionality The Effects of Traffic Structure on Application and Network Performance provides the necessary tools for maximizing the network efficiency of any Internet application, and presents ground-breaking research that will influence how these applications are built in the future.  The book outlines how to design and run all types of networking experiments, and establishes the best practices in synthetic traffic generation for current and future researchers and practitioners to follow.  It addresses some basic concepts and methods of traffic generation, but also details extensive empirical research in testing and evaluating network protocols and applications within a laboratory setting. The Effects of Traffic Structure on Application and Network Performance is designed as a reference book for networking professionals who must design, plan, test and evaluate their networks.  Advanced-level students and researchers in computer science and engineering will find this book valuable as well.
