Abstract

The challenges of addressing health disparities, the ethical imperative to include stakeholders in research, and the slow translation of research evidence into practice are all driving a movement towards more community-based and participatory approaches to research. Researching Health Together brings together authors who have produced innovative methods or implemented projects focused on different stages of the research process, from question development to evaluation and translation. Editor Emily B. Zimmerman gathers exemplary new methods and projects into one place for the benefit of students designing research projects and proposals, those learning stakeholder-engaged methods, and those involved in implementing and funding stakeholder-engaged projects. Abstract

Educational inequalities have strongly impacted disadvantaged and underserved populations such us indigenous, Roma, migrant children, students with disabilities, and those affected by poverty. A wide array of research has contributed to explaining the mechanisms and effects of inequalities in the achievement patterns, dropout rates, disengagement in the school experiences of children and youth traditionally excluded. Research also suggests the negative consequences for child development – including cognitive, language, and social–emotional functioning – of poverty and lack of quality education in the early years. Consequently, the current unequal access to optimal learning environments for every single child to succeed in education and to have a better life perpetuates the exclusion and neglects the right to education for those minorities. This Research Topic aims at moving beyond causes and shed light upon effective solutions by providing successful pathways for integration and inclusion of the learners most heavily affected. Scholars worldwide are looking for successful actions with children, youth, and communities of learners historically underserved to overcome educational and social exclusion. These transformative approaches go beyond the deficit thinking and are grounded in theories, empirical evidence, and multidisciplinary interventions oriented towards achieving social impact, which refers to the extent to which those actions have contributed to improve a societal challenge. The international network of “Schools as Learning Communities” is advancing knowledge on deepening and expanding the impact of what has been defined as Successful Educational Actions (SEAs); that is, those interventions that improve students’ achievement and social cohesion and inclusion in many diverse contexts, regardless the socioeconomic, national, and cultural environment of schools. Drawing on the evidence generated by this network of researchers to address the global challenge of inequality by studying educational actions oriented towards achieving social impact and potentially transferrable to other contexts, this Research Topic aims at deepening on this approach. In short, our purpose is that the contributions included in this Research Topic contribute to reduce educational and social inequalities and especially benefit those populations most in need.

Abstract

There has been an increasing interest in the emerging subfield within linguistics and anthropology often referred to as community-based research (Himmelmann 1998, Rice 2010, Crippen and Robinson 2013, among others). This volume brings together perspectives from academics, community members, and those that find themselves in both academia and the community. The volume begins with a working definition of the notions of community-based research as a practice and illustrates how such notions shifted, without abandoning the outlined tenets within the working definition, as the chapters developed to include notions of community-based research as a tool and ideology as well as an orientation. Each of the 17 chapters represents a case-study with the first five including discussions of broader issues and theoretical perspectives while exploring community-based research as an emerging subfield within linguistics. The case-studies comprise work from the Americas, Australia, India, Europe, and Africa. The goal of the volume is to build on the emerging literature and practices in the field to arrive at a better understanding of how community-based research is theorized and practiced in a variety of environments, communities, and cultures.

"People with serious mental illness get sick and die 10-20 years younger, compared to others in their same age cohort. The reasons, and possible interventions, are many, but further research is necessary for the continued development and evaluation of strategies to combat the health challenges faced by these patients. In thoroughly describing community-based participatory research (CBPR)-an approach that includes people in a community as partners in all facets of research, rather than just the subjects of that research-Health and Wellness in People Living With Serious Mental Illness provides a template for continued study. Abstract

"The book describes in detail the findings of five seasons (2008-2012) of survey and excavation in Port Joli, and ten years of laboratory analysis, undertaken by the Canadian Museum of History, in collaboration with Acadia First Nation. It also incorporates data recovered from previous archaeological work conducted in Port Joli by Erskine, Raddall, Millard, and others, providing a complete synthesis of one of Nova Scotia’s richest Indigenous archaeological records. Reviving the art of a traditional archaeology 'site monograph', the work provides a complete presentation of all the archaeological information recovered, including full-colour artifact plates, technical drawings, profiles, and maps, in addition to a complete data description and synthesis. The final chapter presents a culture history of the Port Joli, summarizing how the 'pretty harbour' became a central place for Mi’kmaq prior to the arrival of Europeans. Abstract

This republished Special Issue highlights recent and emergent concepts and approaches to water governance that re-centers the political in relation to water-related decision making, use, and management. To do so at once is to focus on diverse ontologies, meanings and values of water, and related contestations regarding its use, or its importance for livelihoods, identity, or place-making. Building on insights from science and technology studies, feminist, and postcolonial approaches, we engage broadly with the ways that water-related decision making is often depoliticized and evacuated of political content or meaning—and to what effect. Key themes that emerged from the contributions include the politics of water infrastructure and insecurity; participatory politics and multi-scalar governance dynamics; politics related to emergent technologies of water (bottled or packaged water, and water desalination); and Indigenous water governance.
