The ecomuseum phenomenon has grown dramatically in recent years. There is now no one ecomuseum model, but rather a philosophy that has been adapted and moulded for use in a variety of situations. With many more ecomuseums being established, the international appeal and reach of the idea grows; these changes are reflected in the 'geographical' sections of this volume. Of particular significance is the rise in ecomuseology in India, China (including Taiwan), Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as significant increases in Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic and Turkey.

In remote areas of Europe, local history museums struggle to connect with the rapidly changing and increasingly diverse communities around them. This book asks how these museums can recast themselves to strengthen the links to their communities. Combining theoretical deliberations, empirical investigations of the case of two Norwegian islands and a museum experiment, this book offers starting points for rethinking this institution, while at the same time providing suggestions for locally adapted museum practice. The book is of interest to anyone interested in the present and future of local history and small local history museums in times of major demographic transformation.

After the end of the apartheid regime in the 1990s, South Africa experienced a boom in new heritage and commemorative projects. These ranged from huge new museums and monuments to small community museums and grassroots memory work. At the same time, South African cities have continued to grapple with the difficulties of overcoming entrenched inequalities and divisions. Urban spaces are deep repositories of memory, and also sites in need of radical transformation. 'Remaking the Urban' examines the intersections between post-apartheid urban transformation and the politics of heritage-making in divided cities, using the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in South Africa's Eastern Cape as a case study.
