Screening for HIV infection is the first step in the continuum of health care and yet is the least optimal. At present, in Belgium, it is estimated that 20% of the people infected with HIV do know their HIV-positive status and 35% of the people with HIV are diagnosed late. However, early treatment of HIV-positive patients prevents the transmission of new infections and ensures a better quality of life. To remedy this problem, one solution consists in providing a self-test, a device enabling the patient to perform and interpret the test himself at home and without medical assistance. This test is now available in the Belgian pharmacies since November 23, 2016. The pharmacist, however, has a much important role in the provision of such a test because its result could have serious consequences. The question that arises is that of the psychological status of the individual who will learn his seropositive status without appropriate advice and support and who could then not know what to do. The pharmacist should therefore provide the necessary information to correctly make the test and to interpret its results, and he should refer the patient to a medical service if necessary. He should also ensure that the person meets the conditions for the self-test and should position himself as a potential, neutral and open-minded interlocutor, so that he would make sure having made available all the possible support within the limits of his functions.

"Exploratory Research in Clinical and Social Pharmacy provides a forum for initial exploratory work in the field of clinical and social pharmacy needed to describe phenomena and relationships among people involved in the medication use process to lay the groundwork for the design of interventions as well as future hypothesis-testing, theory-driven research in the field, applicable anywhere but with special attention devoted to low- and middle-income countries. The scope includes patient attitudes, patient behaviors, prescribing patterns, pharmacy staff/workforce initiatives, medication safety reports, pharmacoepidemiological considerations, and implementation science, which evaluates how initial development considerations of a process or new medication-related service is one that can be sustained over time, sometimes explored through the use of qualitative research methods."--Publisher
