As poverty and unemployment deepen in contemporary South Africa, the burning question becomes, how do the poor survive? Eating from One Pot provides a compelling answer. Based on intensive fieldwork, it shows how many African households are on the brink of collapse. That they keep going at all can largely be attributed to the struggles of older women against poverty. They are the fulcrum on which household survival turns. This book describes how households in two different areas in KwaZulu-Natal are sites of both stability and conflict. As one of the interviewees put it: 'We eat from one pot and should always help each other.' Yet the stability of family networks is becoming fragile because of the enormous burden placed on them by unemployment and unequal power relations. Through careful analysis, the experiences of survival are discussed in relation to the restructuring of the country's welfare and social policies, and the extension of social grants. Mosoetsa argues that these policies shape the livelihoods that people pursue in order to survive under desperate conditions, but fail to address the root causes of poverty and inequality.

Du voyage du socialiste gallois Robert Owen en 1825 aux premières communautés fouriéristes, des mouvements contestataires des années 1960 à l'écologie et aux groupes punks ou lesbiens d'aujourd'hui, les États-Unis ont abrité nombre de communautés utopiques. Souvent installés comme jadis les moines dans des paysages magnifiques et isolés, mais aussi dans l'hôtel d'un village de l'ancienne Réserve de l'Ouest ou exploitant une mine de charbon sur leur territoire, ces groupes mettent à l'épreuve une volonté de vivre en dehors de la logique de la société dominante. En revenant sur près de deux siècles d'expériences communautaires, ce livre lève non seulement le voile sur un phénomène méconnu et toujours actuel, mais le réinsère parmi les tentatives de lutte contre un système omnipotent, ouvrant une autre voie, originale et non exclusive, vers l'émancipation sociale.

The idea of a better society as associated with the communal idea is investigated from both theoretical perspectives and through contemporary experiences around the world. This idea leaves nobody indifferent. Whatever the hardship that its concretization implies, however, once it does materialize, it cannot, as such avoid new challenges, tensions and unexpected claims. This means, at varying degrees, negations of, and removals from, the “utopian inspiration”. Humans are able to create unprecedented conditions of life under most ambitious inspirations, but are unable to safeguard their achievements from change, alterations and contradictions. In this, however, another aspect of the utopian realizations is that they ultimately leave room for new utopist thinking and enrolment. As far, indeed, the utopian inspiration draws its vitality from potent civilizational codes, its renewal from ashes is as unavoidable as its self-betrayal through materialization.
