The Reformation of the Decalogue tells two important but previously untold stories: of how the English Reformation transformed the meaning of the Ten Commandments, and of the ways in which the Ten Commandments helped to shape the English Reformation itself. Adopting a thematic structure, it contributes new insights to the history of the English Reformation, covering topics such as monarchy and law, sin and salvation, and Puritanism and popular religion. It includes, for the first time, a comprehensive analysis of surviving Elizabethan and Early Stuart 'commandment boards' in parish churches, and presents a series of ten case studies on the Commandments themselves, exploring their shifting meanings and significance in the hands of Protestant reformers. Willis combines history, theology, art history and musicology, alongside literary and cultural studies, to explore this surprisingly neglected but significant topic in a work that refines our understanding of British history from the 1480s to 1625.

Der Wiener Hofkaplan Ulrich von Pottenstein († 1416), bekannt als Übersetzer der lateinischen Cyrillusfabeln, hat mit seinem "Handbuch der gelehrten Katechese", von ihm selbst nur 'buoch' genannt, das größte Summenwerk des deutschen Mittelalters (etwa 1060 Folioblätter) geschaffen. In vier Teilen legt er das Pater noster (I), das Ave Maria (II), das Credo (III) und die Zehn Gebote (IV) aus. Seine Quellen sind die maßgeblichen Werke der lateinischen Theologie und Pastoralliteratur ("Decretum Gratiani", "Summa theologiae" des Thomas von Aquin, "Summa de vitiis et virtutibus" des Wilhelm von Peyrant). Mit Rücksicht auf seine Benutzer, Kleriker und Laien, wählt er, Luther vergleichbar, eine Sprachform, die sich dem gemeinen lauf dewtscher sprach nach des lanndes gewonheit (Prolog) anschließt. Der vorliegende Band, eine Arbeit des Sonderforschungsbereiches 226 Würzburg/Eichstätt, erschließt Ulrichs Werk als einzigartiges Zeugnis volkssprachlicher Wissensvermittlung im deutschen Spätmittelalter durch die Edition des wichtigen Prologs zum Gesamtwerk und des Ersten Gebotes der Dekalogauslegung (IV) mit Beigabe der neu entdeckten Quellen. Eine umfängliche Einleitung informiert über den Autor und insbesondere sein Werk, seinen Aufbau und Inhalt, seine Sprache und Quellen, sowie seine Überlieferung und Wirkung.
