Recaptioning Congo places the colonial Congo's photography history in new perspectives. Various writers take an African-centered look at imperial archival images and provide them with creative, contemporary and/or literary 'captions'.The book accompanies an exhibition at FOMU photography museum in Antwerp and is based upon the extensive research of the photographic history of colonial Congo (1885 - 1960), conducted by Dr. Sandrine Colard. It contains a wealth of revealing images that highlight the relationship between past and present, Africa and Europe and Belgium and Congo. Recaptioning Congo plaatst de fotografiegeschiedenis van koloniaal Congo in een nieuw perspectief. Diverse schrijvers werpen een Afrikaanse blik op de imperialistische archiefbeelden en voorzien ze van creatieve, hedendaagse en/of literaire 'bijschriften'. Dit boek verschijnt bij de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het Antwerpse fotomuseum FOMU en is gebaseerd op het jarenlange onderzoek van Dr. Sandrine Colard naar de fotografiegeschiedenis van koloniaal Congo (1885 - 1960). Recaptioning Congo bevat een schat aan onthullende beelden die de relatie tussen heden en verleden, Afrika en Europa en België en Congo op scherp stellen. La publication Recaptioning Congo place l'histoire de la photographie coloniale au Congo dans de nouvelles perspectives. Cinq écrivains et un choeur de voix de Congolais "de tous les jours" jettent un regard africain sur les images d'archives coloniales et les pourvoient de « légendes » créatives, contemporaines et/ou littéraires. Cet ouvrage paraît à l'occasion de l'exposition éponyme au musée de la photographie d'Anvers (FOMU) fondée sur une recherche de plusieurs années menée par la Dr. Sandrine Colard concernant l'histoire de la photographie au Congo colonial (1885-1960), et renferme un trésor de photos révélatrices illustrant la relation entre présent et passé, Afrique et Europe, Belgique et Congo.
