Historically black colleges and universities are adept at training scientists. Marybeth Gasman and Thai-Huy Nguyen follow ten HBCU programs that have grown their student cohorts and improved performance. These science departments furnish a bold new model for other colleges that want to better serve African American students.

This book examines colleges and universities across the diaspora with majority African, African-American, and other Black designated student enrollments. The nomenclature of this cohort connotes an assumption of racial exclusivity and homogenous monolithism. Research confirms that these campuses possess a flourishing landscape with racial, economic, and gender diversity while sharing a Black identity created through global racialization. Globally, Black colleges and universities create academic and social environments where different races, sexes, cultures, languages, nationalities, and citizenship status coexist, enabling academic achievement, civic engagement, and colonial resistance. This volume highlights racial hegemony in multi-national student experiences and achievement; examines the social and career implications of attendance on lifelong success; explores the impact of global Black marginalization and racist ideology on Black college communities; and explores the role gender plays in outcomes and attainment. This book engages the diversity of black colleges and universities and explains their critical role in promoting academic excellence in higher education.

"The presence and experiences of Black people at elite universities have been largely underrepresented and erased from institutional histories. This book engages with a collection of these experiences that span half a century and reflect differences in class, gender, and national identifications among Black scholars. By mapping Black people's experiences of studying and teaching at McGill University, this book reveals how the "whiteness" of the university both includes and exceeds the racial identities of students and professors. It highlights the specific functions of Blackness and of anti-Blackness within society in general and within the institution of higher education in particular, demonstrating how structures and practices of the university reproduce interlocking systems of oppression that uphold racial capitalism, reproduce colonial relations, and promote settler nationalism. Critically engaging the work of Black learners, academics, organizers, and activists within this dynamic political context, this book underscores the importance of Black Studies across North America."--

"Blackface--instances in which non-Black persons temporarily darken their skin with make-up to impersonate Black people, usually for fun, and frequently in educational contexts--constitutes a postracialist pedagogy that propagates antiblack logics. In Performing Postracialism, Philip S.S. Howard examines instances of contemporary blackface in Canada and argues that it is more than a simple matter of racial (mis)representation. The book looks at the ostensible humour and dominant conversations around blackface, arguing that they are manifestations of the particular formations of antiblackness in the Canadian nation state and its educational institutions. It posits that the occurrence of blackface in universities is not incidental, and outlines how educational institutions’ responses to blackface in Canada rely upon a motivation to protect whiteness. Performing Postracialism draws from focus groups and individual interviews conducted with university students, faculty, administrators, and Black student associations, along with online articles about blackface, to provide the basis for a nuanced examination of the ways that blackface is experienced by Black persons. The book investigates the work done by Black students, faculty, and staff at universities to challenge blackface and the broader campus climate of antiblackness that generates it."--

The striking new importance of higher education in the lives of black Americans is a major reason for The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education (JBHE). JBHE provides new information about the governance, policies, and practices in our colleges and universities. JBHE also publishes articles which address the broader intellectual issues, policies, and strategies that affect the progress of blacks in institutions of higher education.
