Cognition is central to everyday life. It is impossible to live independently without higher order functions of planning, organization, attention, memory, and awareness. Introductie: Autismespectrumstoornissen (ASS) kennen een hoog prevalentiecijfer (61,9/10.000) en is een veelvoorkomende stoornis in onze maatschappij. Probleemstelling: Aan de diagnostiek van ASS (bij adolescenten) gaat een multidisciplinair proces vooraf. Eén van de onderdelen van dit proces is het toetsen van de sociaal cognitieve vaardigheden. In de huidige onderzoeks- of observatie-instrumenten ontbreekt echter vaak audiovisueel materiaal bij het voorleggen van deze sociale situaties. Methode: In het voorafgaand systematisch literatuuronderzoek werden 75 artikels geïncludeerd. De studie is gebaseerd op de verklaringsmodellen van autisme, sociale cognitie en diagnostiek betreffende ASS. Resultaten: In het totaal werden 9 filmfragmenten ontwikkeld waarbij een sociale situatie wordt nagebootst. Aan de hand van deze fragmenten kan de betreffende testleider een categorisering maken van de mogelijkheden en beperkingen van adolescenten op vlak van sociale cognitie. Conclusie: Dit observatie-instrument kan het vermoeden van autisme niet bevestigen of ontkrachten maar het helpt bij het onderbouwen van hypotheses. Het observatie-instrument is niet gestandaardiseerd of genormeerd en dient dus enkel en alleen gebruikt te worden ter observatie van aspecten van sociale cognitie.
