Based on the latest excavations and research, and on a wide variety of source material from historical accounts, epigraphy, numismatics and geography, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the Roman military fortifications along the North Sea and the Channel. It states that they played periodically a crucial role in the coastal defence. Because of the state of preservation of the so-called Saxon Shore forts, authors mainly focused on British evidence. For the first time emphasis is given to the Continent. This book will appeal to the specialist as well as to anyone interested in Roman military archaeology and history. It is lavishly provided with illustrations, many previously unpublished. After discussing main topics as Germanic seaborne raiding, the mechanisms used to fight off and prevent seaborne raiding, the shoreforts and and other means developed by the Romans in order to protect the coasts of the North Sea and Channel, are brought up. The second part of the book consists of a catalogue of the Roman military sites in those areas.

This edited volume explores the larger maritime and security environment during and beyond the time of Chinese military general Qi Jiguang’s enterprise. While serving as a historiography and biography of Qi Jiguang, the book also elaborates on the doctrinal applications of his ideas. Essays in this volume contribute to the field of China studies in light of the increased frequency of news relating to the maritime and military affairs in the region in the post-2000 period. It provides a specialist perspective to the uneven study of Qi Jiguang and maritime/military studies, while also satisfying the desire of the layman to understand the current political security situation in East Asia in the context of the longer term historical developments.

This book is the result of a stimulating Special Issue of Water, focusing on the “Interaction between waves and Maritime Structures”. This broadly inclusive title allowed the gathering of articles on different topics of engineering concern, making the book appeal to both scientists and practical engineers. Original contributions on evergreen problems, such as wave overtopping at conventional and unconventional coastal structures, wave-induced pressures at vertical walls, hydraulic stability of rubble mound breakwaters and dynamics of crown-walls indeed represent the main core of the book; however, other intriguing research topics are also tackled, including the solution of the Navier–Stokes equations for biphase flows, the downscaling of large maritime structures in a physical lab, floating bodies mechanics and the numerical modeling of coastline evolution.

"Japan is quintessentially by geography a maritime country. Maritime surveillance capabilities - underwater, shore-based and airborne - are critical to its national defence posture. This book describes and assesses these capabilities, with particular respect to the underwater segment, about which there is little strategic analysis in publicly available literature. Since the end of the Cold War, Chinese oceanographic and navy vessels have intruded into Japanese waters with increasing frequency, not counting their activities in disputed waters such as around the Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands and Okinotorishima where China and Japan have overlapping territorial claims. These intrusions have increasingly involved warships, including submarines, sometimes acting quite aggressively. Japan maintains an extraordinary network of undersea hydrophone arrays, connected to shore-stations which are typically equipped with electronic intelligence (ELINT) systems, for monitoring, identifying and tracking submarine and surface traffic in its internal straits and surrounding seas. Some parts of this network are operated jointly with, and are of crucial importance to, the US Navy. Japan's superlative submarine detection capabilities would be of decisive advantage in any submarine engagement. But the relevant facilities are relatively vulnerable, which makes them very lucrative targets in any conflict.
