Hemophilia and Von Willebrand Disease: Factor VIII and Von Willebrand Factor serves as a must-have reference on the important role these essential blood-clotting proteins play in research and clinical medicine. Clinicians and researchers face the daily challenge of staying current on the vast amounts of research that is now generated. The reference to Janus in the title refers to the two roles of the Factor VIII/Von Willebrand Factor Complex: initiation of coagulation and propagation of clot formation. The complex prevents bleeding in hemophilia and Von Willebrand disease but also augments arterial and venous thrombosis. Presents one source of information on Hemophilia and Von Willebrand Disease, as well as Factor VIII and Von Willebrand Factor, eliminating the search through hundreds of journal articles.--

The book Hemophilia - Recent Advances covers various rapid advances being made in this field. The authors have produced state-of-the art chapters. Over some decades, management of hemophilia has progressed from episode based to prophylaxis. It has moved from plasma and cryoprecipitate to new generations of recombinant coagulation factors. Efforts have been made to cover recent advances in the field. The intricacies of genotype and phenotype of hemophilia are explained. Management with recombinant factors has added to problems like inhibitors, which require more skillful handling. Perioperative management of hemophilia is also explained. Every chapter of this book is peer reviewed and evidence based. The information provided in this book makes the readers well informed and more inquisitive, thereby raising new issues, innovation, and research.

Motion analysis as introduced 2 years ago on a national basis effectively identifies individual functional disorders and provides a means for describing them on the basis of a score. Individual therapy planning is possible. More treatment tends to produce better function scores and thus helps to lower the strain on the joint. Further study is required in order to determine whether this reduces the incidence of bleeding. Knee function is age-dependent. Height, weight and sporting activity seem to be influencing factors.Demeanor, pain, fatigue and parental motivation do not seem to have an impact. The roll-and-glide pattern is not age-dependent and probably shows functional abnormalities of the knee.Functional benchmarking of the sites is possible but d- ficult because each site selects the children differently.Age differences also render an overall assessment difficult. Some sites performed negative screening so as to only test children with more severe problems, while other sites performed no such selection. In other sites, the only children to show up for motion analysis were those with well informed parents and who are always involved in all the other activities on offer too.

A few short years after HIV first entered the world blood supply in the late 1970s and early 1980s, over half the hemophiliacs in the United States were infected with the virus. But this was far more than just an unforeseeable public health disaster. Negligent doctors, government regulators, and Big Pharma all had a hand in this devastating epidemic. Blood on Their Hands is an inspiring, firsthand account of the legal battles fought on behalf of hemophiliacs who were unwittingly infected with tainted blood. As part of the team behind the key class action litigation filed by the infected, young New Jersey lawyer Eric Weinberg was faced with a daunting task: to prove the negligence of a powerful, well-connected global industry worth billions. Weinberg and journalist Donna Shaw tell the dramatic story of how idealistic attorneys and their heroic, mortally-ill clients fought to achieve justice and prevent further infections. A stunning exposé of one of the American medical system's most shameful debacles, Blood on Their Hands is a rousing reminder that, through perseverance, the victims of corporate greed can sometimes achieve great victory.
