Unlike other books on architecture and film, Architecture Filmmaking investigates how the now-expanded field of architecture utilizes the practice of filmmaking (feature/short film, stop motion animation and documentary) or video/moving image in research, teaching and practice, and what the consequences of this interdisciplinary exchange are. While architecture and filmmaking have clearly distinct disciplinary outputs and filmmaking is a much younger art than architecture, the intersection between them is less defined. This book investigates the ways in which architectural researchers, teachers of architecture, their students and practising architects, filmmakers and artists are using filmmaking uniquely in their practice.

The book investigates speculative filmic architectural projects and animations that go beyond representing buildings, touching upon issues concerning medium, act of representation, or conducting criticism on history, culture, society, or urban politics, along with the mediated character of contemporary spatial experience – interpreting it primarily through protocols of architectural imaging. The book centres on the influence of simulation and cinematic design on visionary or speculative architecture. It outlines the impact of film and animation in architectural representation through key projects. The opening analysis is useful in contextualizing speculative architectural projects, while the later chapters link the theory to the imagery. Stasiowski uses a diverse collection of interesting case studies that are easy to read and well-chosen to support his argument. This is a well-researched work and comprehensive review of speculative architecture and various media that describe it. Stasiowski makes a thorough argument about the use of cinema and animation as a method of architectural visualization. Stasiowki’s book sets itself apart from other work in the same area by in discussing speculative projects in relation to cinema. and specifically, the effect that modern technologies are having on the subject now and in its potential futures. The borderline between material environment and spatialized imagery becomes progressively more blurred, while demand for visionary works that would make sense of this merging, has never been greater. It will appeal primarily to architects and designers, filmmakers and academics. It may also be of interest to artists, set designers, and film production designers.

From Le Corbusier to MVRDV and from Diller+Scofidio to Peter Eisenman: architects have been setting their sights on film ever since the late 1920s, exploring how this medium can improve the representation and communication of architecture and urban design. The makers of the films in Spots in Shots allow us to experience the built world in surprising and enriching ways. They take an oblique look at architecture, aiming not so much to convey information about material, construction and finishing, as to present buildings and places through the vicissitudes, emotions and thoughts of real or fictitious people. After an introduction to the genre, author Mélanie van der Hoorn presents a historical overview of the ‘canon’ of architecture films since the start of the twentieth century, followed by a discussion of where short architecture films ‘reside’: at festivals, on specialized websites, in museum collections. In the second part of the book, she discusses a selection of 36 short architecture films made since 1990, drawing on exhaustive interviews with the makers to shed light on how the films were conceived, distributed and received.

"Cine-scapes explores the relationship between urban space, architecture and the moving image. While an impressive amount of research has been done with regards to the study of architecture portrayed in film, this book will offer a new perspective. There is little doubt that film can 'reflect' a postmodern condition, however, what this book demonstrates is that the postmodern, architectural condition in which we live is in fundamental terms filmic. We daily engage with spaces and places that are essentially cine-tectural. Drawing on the author's knowledge derived from architectural and film practice, Cine-scapes will: offer insight into architecture and urban debates through the eyes of a practitioner working in both fields - film and architectural design emphasise how cine-tectural tendencies are taking place or finding their way into urban practices can be used as a tool for educators, students and practitioners in architecture and urban design to communicate and discuss design issues with regard to contemporary architecture and cities. Cine-scapes ignites new ways of seeing, thinking and debating the nature of architecture and urban spaces"--

Architecture and film have many things in common. Film narratives are embedded in scenes that visually support the story. Sometimes architecture even performs the role of an actor. Conversely, film with its multifaceted changing atmospheres reveals new layers of architecture which, outside the cinema, would remain concealed. In conclusion, film as a mass medium influences the way architecture is perceived, and its image in society. Since the beginning of cinema, architecture has formed a symbiosis with film.00With its systematic analysis, this book offers a scientifically researched history of mutual influence, starting with filmography as a typology of well-known film sets through to the description of the chameleon effect between film and architecture.

After World War II, a wave of Italian films emerged that depicted the life and hardships of characters left helpless after the conflict, bringing to the screen the struggles of a time of existential angst and uncertainty. This form of filmmaking was associated with a broader artistic phenomenon known as 'neorealism' and is now considered a pivotal point in the history of Italian cinema. But neorealism was not limited to film any more than it was to literature. It spread to other areas of artistic production, including architecture. What was, then, neorealist architecture? This book explores the links between architecture, filmmaking and the built environment in dopoguerra Italy (194X-195X) seeking to ascertain whether, and how, neorealism manifested itself in architecture. Terms such as 'neorealist architecture' or 'architectural neorealism' were hinted at in these years and recalled by historians of architecture in the following decades. Therefore, the concept was adopted ad hoc and popularized post hoc, in the absence of any declarations prior to 1955 that proclaimed what neorealism in architecture was or wanted to be. However, while the concept has been internalized by Italian architectural history, transfers between neorealism -as an aesthetic and ethic- and architecture -as one potential medium of its embodiment or expression- are still not fully understood. Therefore, its main goal is to provide an in-depth discussion of the concept 'neorealist architecture', the working assumption being that the connection between both terms is not meaningless. The book is beautifully illustrated with over 100 black and white archival images and is the first book to be published on neorealism in architecture. It will appeal to scholars, professionals and students interested in history and theory of architecture, Italian studies, art history and cultural studies.
