Emanuel de Witte (1615/16-1691/92) genoot in de zeventiende eeuw een grote reputatie genoot als vernieuwend schilder, vooral van kerkinterieurs. Circa 400 jaar geleden zag Emanuel de Witte in Alkmaar het licht, dat hij als geen ander in de Gouden Eeuw wist vast te leggen. Emanuel de Witte werd, net als tijdgenoot Caesar van Everdingen, geboren in Alkmaar. Zijn opleiding kreeg hij in Delft bij de stilleven schilder Evert van Aelst (1602-1657). Als jonge schilder begon De Witte met een breed scala aan onderwerpen, waaronder Bijbelse en mythologische onderwerpen op klein formaat en portretten. Echt beroemd werd hij echter met zijn kerkinterieurs, waarin een opvallende werking van het licht zijn composities een uniek signatuur gaven. Daarnaast had de eigenzinnige De Witte ook zo zijn een eigen kijk op perspectief: bij hem niet de gebruikelijke ruime blik door het kerkinterieur, maar eerder een uitsnede daarvan of beeld vanuit een heel beperkt gezichtsveld. Een tiental goedbevolkte marktscenes, havengezichten en een enkel portret completeren zijn oeuvre.
